French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic, sometimes unofficially referred to as an overseas country. It is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over an expanse of more than 2000 kilometres (1245 miles) in the South Pacific Ocean, yet its total land area is only 4167 square kilometres (1609 square miles). Briefly:1842: French took over the islands and established a French protectorate they called Settlements in Oceania. 1903: Name changed officially to French Settlements in Oceania.
1958: Name changed officially to French Polynesia.More details:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_PolynesiaOn the Globe: Map: Tahiti
