Attended the Old Book and Paper Show in Toronto today, a semi-annual market where vendors sell old paper (duh!). Not as impressed as usual. Prices seem to be going up, which I guess is an indication it's successful. Also I managed to persuade my wife to go, which would be nice, of course, except her staying power is not as strong as mine, so we left earlier than I would have liked. But had a nice lunch. Anyway, the first item I picked up was this tiny US cover postmarked January 26 1917 in Indianapolis Indiana. Inside is a little birth announcement. At 3.375" across, it's now my smallest cover.

Heres another little cover for the topic. It's the samllest cover I've ever seen. Barely has enough space for the large banknote and the address, it's 2 3/4" long and 1 3/4" high. At one time these were quite popular, they are known as Ladies Covers.

Its a wonder they didn't make little tiny Ladies Stamps! I don't wonder why...lol Remember hearing about the US 1869 Pictorials? Remember reading about everyone complaining about both their appearance and size? I think that after all that the U.S. stamp authorities back then had well learned a good lesson!

ILS - but they did! In 1981 the USPS experimented with 2 tiny issues. Shown here is the Dolley Madison Scott 1821, issued in 1981 beside a nickle. The design was 18mm X 16mm. Looks like a tiny Ladies stamp to me Theron.

You know I actually forgot all about the "tiny Dolly Madison's" until you showed them! DOH! You understand my my "argument" though, about stamp size and that period between then and after WWII. right?
