What I collect: Worldwide airmail stamps through 1940, unused

I was looking at the collecting interests of new members in the American Philatelist for November. I strayed into the Deceased members, where I thankfully did not find my name. I did find something that has puzzled me for some time. Maybe someone here can explain.
Some of the Deceased have hyphenated numbers. For instance:
Berman, A. William (9309-064435)
Did the APS once give everyone a hyphenated number? Are the people with these numbers pioneers? Or, could they be members of an exalted class, about which we are allowed to know little? I joined 20 years ago and have a standard six-digit handle (173272).
Anyone know why some people have a hyphenated number?
