Pitcairn Island. 1990 Pitcairn Island stamp, roller cancelled on Pitcairn Fibre. (The Leaf) Most probably tourist gimmick. Used covers exist of Covers made using Pitcairn Fibre, made by the Postmaster.

Interesting item!
Is the Pitcairn Fibre the leaf the stamp is stuck on or the paper the stamp is printed on?

Interesting item! Is the Pitcairn Fibre the leaf the stamp is stuck on or the paper the stamp is printed on? Hi Brian, yes the item is mine, purchased at auction 10 years or so, ago for $1 Hi Jen, It is the leaf the stamp is adhered to. Of what plant, remains unknown to me, Pandanus was the most widely used fibres in the Pacific, for the sails on the canoes, mats and baskets etc, but obviously this leaf is not Pandanus. Going by Pitcairn stamps, a wild guess may be "Cordyline terminalis" Page from catalogue "Pitcairn Island Stamps" by Bill Hornadge (Australia)

I don't care if that is a tourist gimmick, considering Pitcairn gets 1 or 2 tourists a year - it is a great item! $1? Wow! I'd give plenty more for that!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Earlier today angore posted the first set from Pitcairn Island on the World Number One thread. This set includes a stamp featuring Captain William Bligh and his infamous HMS Bounty. When I was in London in June I learned that Captain Bligh was buried in the grounds of the St. Mary-at-Lambeth in the inner courtyard of the Garden Museum. I visited the museum on my last day and saw his tomb. Most of us will remember the movie Mutiny on the Bounty. The replica used in the movie was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. As a kid I was at the launching in 1960.

Finding non-FDCs from Pitcairn is not easy. This one pre-dates the issue of stamps by the Island. Would be interesting to know if it was really sent by someone on Pitcairn.
