Pope Francis, issued 2008, used in 2009. There are very few Catholics in Tuvalu. The stamp is not CTO. I soaked it off a damaged cover.

In my experience, very rarely, if ever, have I seen a CTO with a full CDS strike. Usually a quarter circle on one of the corners. What is the situation with the individual Islands stamps, Brian? Is this a money making exercise? or do they have independence postally? I had a dashed time looking for NUI-TUVALU, never knew they existed until today.

Rod, the stamps inscribed Tuvalu, plus an island name (i.e. Nui-Tuvalu) were strictly an attempted money maker introduced by the philatelic agents in the mid 1980's and lasted until the late 80's. There was no postal autonomy at all given to the individual islands, and no definitive stamps were produced. The stamps were sold only at the Philatelic Bureau on Funafuti, not on the outer islands (there are some exceptions to this, I will explore later). All stamps were thematic with topics such as transportation, sports and royalty. The program was a failure. Tuvalu made very little money and it destroyed their philatelic reputation up to this day. Quite a scandal developed, and the Tuvalu Government tried to sue the agents. An interesting read here: tuvaluislands.com/stamps/LOW_story.htm

Definitely socked on the bottom, Admin. Strange thing with early painters, no matter how gifted the artisans were, they never could quite get babies / children correct. Ganymede was supposed to have been abducted by Zeus (The Eagle) whilst tending sheep ? Rembrandt has this little tacker as a Baby. "Ganymede waters Zeus" (Isn't this just beautiful) wiki Ganymede Waters Zeus as an Eagle by Bertel Thorvaldsen (Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen).

Of interest George Meade had no intention of a battle at Gettysburgh and was committed by subordinates who didn't really like his plan of another location. He had very little control of the battles first two days and most of the outcome was determined by commanders thinking on the fly.

Ah yes, those postcards and cinderellas. They are prototypes for the "Talofa Project", something I was involved in with a couple of Tuvaluans, including a young photographer/artist, about 10 years ago. Sadly the photographer died tragically shortly after, and the project was abandoned. The goal was to produced quality postcards in the islands and offer a mailing service so collectors around the world could get them cancelled in the islands. I have more examples, will try to find and show.
I guess I sent some to you - they were never sold - but I don't remember - my memory must be going!
