I mentioned the other day that I'd purchased some bundles of covers at an estate auction. What could euphemistically be called 'a s*** load'.
Mostly newer, but it was one of those situations where the auctioneer just wants to get rid of stuff, so he says, '3 X the bid', which means, you bought it all!
Anyway, many are in poor condition, but I will probably get my money out of what is salvageable.
Here are a few I thought of interest.
These first two are just cute, in regards to their size. The bottom cover, postmarked in Toronto in 1920 is only 4 inches across. Not my smallest, but still adorable. The other cover is a mourning cover, with a thin strip of black around the edges. Poor planning on my part, scanning it on black.
The rest are advertising covers. Again, not in the greatest nick, but I like the artwork. Theres also something curious about the cancels on the first two pairs. All these covers were sent to the same drug store.
The first pair sport KGV 2¢ arch issues. They were both cancelled in Toronto four days apart in 1931, with what appears to be the same cancel. Both rubber stamps share some similar idiosyncrasies.
What are the odds?
...pretty good I'd say because the same thing seems to have happened again in 1937 with these two covers sporting KGVI 2¢ muftis postmarked in Toronto seven days apart. Check out the 'O's on Ontario.
These last two are actually the back of covers. The fronts are pretty nondescript both bearing corner cards of the sending companies.
The top is the newer of the two postmarked in Toronto in 1932 with a 2¢ KGV arch. The bottom, and arguably the nicer advert sports 1 and 2¢ admirals (paying that ever present war tax!) postmarked in St. Thomas Ont. in 1916.
"Excuse me, young man. Have you seen someone make off with the body of my automobile?"
