What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Nice couple of pages Hugh. You must have been proud to have received the collection from your father.
I know I would have been :-)

rod222 ... just a follow up from an earlier post thestampforum.boards.net/post/197262I found another non-Australian example of a loose letter ... from the Cook Islands to New Zealand. Stamp:Cook Islands - Cook and Map of Hervey Islands 1p Green and Orange Issued: August 1, 1949 Sc. 132 Postmarks: Purple Handstamp (presumably at sea) Outer Ring - OFFICIAL M.V. MAUI POMARE Inside 8 MAY 1950 Arrival Cancel Outer Ring - AUCKLAND C.I. LOOSE LETTER Inside - 15 MY 50 10 AM The MV Maui Pomare was built for the New Zealand government at the Dublin Shipyards in 1927. It was used as passenger-cargo ship between Auckland, Norfolk Island, Niue, the Cook Islands and Samoa until 1960. Essentially a packet boat.

HughHi Hugh, I am having trouble understanding your cover. Presumably posted aboard the MV MAUI POMARE (Violet Handstamp) and reached New Zealand 7 days later. Fine But how was it going to reach the United States with a 1d (One Penny ) franking ?

rod222 ... Excellent question. There is nothing on the front, or the back, to indicate postage due or any kind of transit. Possibilities? It was given back to the sender after docking for insufficient postage? The sendor asked for, and was able to get, it back ... for reasons of their own? Nobody noticed the rate issue and it was sent as is? No transit or arrival postmarks were used enroute. The sendor was a stamp collector and these were courtesy cancels? A personal philatelic sourvenir? A manufactured forgery for the philatelic market? But, why bother? Even after all this time, it's just a $5 cover. I'll never know. Assuming the postmarks are accurate / genuine, at the very least it's a reference. I've seen the same Auckland postmark on other items. It's a good dealer, so if I was had ... so was he. I doubt he looked very closely. Not exactly a big sale. I'll show it as questionable, probably manufactured, in my miscellaneous cover album. Thanks, as always. Cheers,

Hugh Hi Hugh, thank you for scan of back, I am wondering if somehow, Mr. Cedar was in somehow political, and the covers went into private despatch cases to the US The covers exist for Mr. Cedar over at least 13 years, so would assume to be genuine. They are being estimated at £45 on some sites link

HughHi Hugh, found Mr. Cedar had religious connections, maybe missionary link ? and had special private postage machinations set up, to get mail home. Charles Edward Ceder U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Swedish American Church Records, 1800-1947

rod222Interesting ... a strange mix of the routine and unusal. I'll change the caveat for this cover from 'probably' to 'possibly' questionable (smle). Appreciate your research efforts.
