Right now I am still in the process of transferring my two collections from Steiner-hinged to Vario plastics. Once that is done I figured I can now - with 50 posts - start trading/swopping/exchanging stamps with other members.
But then it suddenly occurred to me that collecting only Portuguese Ceres and Argentine Departmental Officials will not attract swappers by the multitude (I can't even buy them, let alone swap); rather I will be sitting here, like patience on a monument, waiting for the occasional annual email. So I must decide on collecting a common country or two if I am to remain an active member of the group. I have not decided yet but I already have Steiner Classic Russia and Classic Turkey started which included stamps up to and including the year 1940. I also have quantities of post 1940 stamps of these two countries which I could easily use for trading.
As I say, I am not decided yet but that is the way my mind is leaning. I am posting this note now so that when the time comes I will already have a feel for the general opinion out there.

Tony, with the knowledge gained from your past collecting efforts, I'm confident that you will remain an asset to the group regardless of what you currently collect.

Well, Steve, try collecting pre-1940 Armenia or Tripolitania and call out for swapping partners. Ya, right! So if one wants to become and remain part of a group as a swapping partner one must collect Canada, USA, England, Germany, Italy, France, Scandinavia and the rest of the usual suspects. That's what got me fed up with stamps in the first place.

Tony swapping is good for only so long no matter what you collect. When you get to the point of needing the better material so too do the swapping partners, therein lies the termination point.I would love to swap with someone who was holding my last seven numbers but is that a reality?? Swapping should therefore not dictate your collecting scope. When I was young I would trade my duplicates with others. It ended by the time I was twelve I had everything they wanted to trade so it was one sided.I now basically give away my duplicates as what in the world could they offer that I don't already have.

Tony, I'm afraid that I misunderstood your initial post as referring to your ability to remain an active member of the forum on the whole, rather than to a limited group of traders.

No Jerry, now that I have decided to join this group I will stay with this group and shall devote all my available resources and stamping experience to it. I have spent my entire life hobnobbing with languages trying to put a decent loaf of bread on the table and that knowledge I also will donate within time allowances to the group. I guess, as Froggie mentioned, I am nostalgic for the time when I said "I'll give you this stamp if you give me that one". But times have changed; as Madame Signoret once said: Même la nostalgie n'est plus ce qu'elle était - even nostalgia isn't what it used to be. Too bad.
As I only collect the Argie Departmentals and the Portuguese Ceres I can only write about those two. My apprehension lies in that it will come to a point where members will resent even seeing my signature. As I tell my wife every time I receive a new lesson from the Uni: That damn Cicero, I shall die a happy man if I never hear his name again as long as I live.

As for resenting that will never happen.Think of it this way Tony.In years future long after you and I are dust these posts will be here for the next collector to glean whatever bit of knowledge they can from our work.Important stuff when you think in those terms.
