Paintings on stamps is one of my favourite topics. One of my favourite stamps with a painting on it is: It was painted by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and is titled "Cemetary", and was painted in 1909.
Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian painter and composer who was born in 1875 and died in 1911 aged 35.

"Minnesänger I" from the "Manesse Manuscript of Songs",issued May 30th,1961. Scott forged this and the "Minnesänger II" set into one single set.Makes not much sence to me,as the third Minnesänger set is listed seperately. The scans do not show the gold print properly. The original stamps look much more vivid.

Hi, my first post. My wife inherited a small collection so i thought i would post some images onto, hopefully the correct sub-forums, and get some sort of feedback so we can start to organise and prioritise what there is. Thank you for your patience

I always admired the fantastic work of Czeslaw Slania especially for the Swedish post . His engravings were fantastic . The 1000th stamp he produced was indeed a masterpiece Black and white proof : The final issue Which He Autographed at the HAFNIA 2000 Exhibition in Copenhagen

I especially like those UN stamps. Why do they issue stamps -- are they for diplomatic mail to member nations?

I especially like those UN stamps. Why do they issue stamps -- are they for diplomatic mail to member nations? Good question that I can only partially answer. The oldest--from the League of Nations era--were for official mail. Thus all those Swiss regulars overprinted with the name of each organization. But if I have it right, actual UN stamps always have been strictly promotional, money-makers. Those certainly are their only roles today. That and the designs can be extraordinarily good.
The League and other IOs definitely used their overprints on their official mail. But since 1951--when the UN started issuing its own designs--I don't have any official UN mail with cancelled UN stamps. But now you have me looking.

In the U.S. they are good for postage if letters and other items franked with them are posted at the U.N. post office in NYC. NYC stamp dealers used to mail out their orders using UN postage that could be purchased well below face value. Presumably, correspondence from U.N. offices/departments uses U.N. postage.

Earlier last week, I was watching at cavern paintings like these in Ulldecona (Catalonia). It's not that far away from my home (about 200 km) but it's was the first time that I went there. They belong to the Mediterranean cave-painting style. Less detailed and colourful than the Spanish and French ones, but more dynamic and lively.

I started collecting art postcards and stamps many years ago (including Hundertwasser) , and will try to get some others scanned. In the meantime here is one .......... 1995 World Summit for Social Development, Copenhagen United Nations Social Summit. 50c (New York: Michel 680, Vienna: Michel 179, Geneva: Michel 262) 'Dreimal Hoch' ('Three times high')............ from a set of 3. Art of Hundertwasser A little background information on the man himself. 1928 – Born in Vienna on December 15th, as Friedrich Stowasser. By 1934, at the tender age of six, Friedrich had produced his first juvenile drawings. 1943 – saw his first deliberate crayon naturalistic drawings. It was also during this year that about 69 Jewish relations on his mother's side were deported and killed during the 2nd World War. 1948 – he achieved his school-leaving certificate & spent three months at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, under Prof. Robin Christian Andersen. 1952 – Hundertwasser had his first exhibition at the Art Club of Vienna. This was during a brief flirtation with decorative-abstract. 1953 – saw Hundertwasser paint his first spiral. Also had his second stay in Paris. 1958 – he married in Gibraltar (divorced 1960). Read his Mould Manifesto against Rationalism in Architecture at a congress at Seckau monastery. 1959 – he received the Sanbra Prize at the 5th Sao Paolo Biennial. In the same year also founded the Pintorarium, a universal academy of all creative fields, together with Ernst Fuchs and Arnulf Rainer. As guest lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, he drew the Endless Line with Bazon Brock and Harald Schult. Resigned lectureship following a scandal. 1960 – Visited Japan. After his divorce from his first wife came through. 1961 – Hundertwasser married Yuko Ikewada. 1966 – following his divorce from his second wife. 1967 – saw Hundertwasser travel to Uganda and the Sudan. 1971 – worked on the Olympia poster for Munich in Lengmoos. 1976 - World touring exhibition: Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Reykjavik, Copenhagen & Dakar. Albertina graphic tour in the USA: Hanover, Brooklyn, Maryland. 1981 (14 February) – saw the speech in Vienna on false art against nuclear energy and negative avantgarde in modern art whilst receiving the Grand Austrian State Prize. 1982 – architecture doctor, redesigned the facade of the Rosenthal Factory of Selb. 1986 (17 February) - the Hundertwasser House was turned over to the tenants; 70,000 visitors visited the Open House. 1991 (9 April) – KunstHausWien opened. 1999 – Hundertwasser lived and worked in New Zealand. 2000 (19 February) – Died in the Pacific, on board the Queen Elizabeth II from a heart attack. According to his wishes he was being buried in harmony with nature on his land in New Zealand, in the Garden of the Happy Deads, under a tulip tree . .

Yes, I do have the whole set on cards, postmarked at Barcelona's Picasso Museum, on the day of issue. But not all of them are proper maxi-cards, as two of them show pictures that are not in our Picasso museum. I'll scan when I have time. I'm afraid, that too soon!

To really appreciate these, I find that only scans that was made with a CCD type scanner do them justice. The cheaper/common CIS types scanners simply doesn't capture the "depth". This site: sellosyartistas.blogspot.comis filled with extremely high quality scans, including the original art. The artists are shown to the left. You can spend hours browsing through this. Stunning.
