OK Friends: I'm trying to be more of an active participant and less of a lurker here on TSF. I've had a FLICKR account since 2007 and 8 years later, I still find it to be the most counter-intuitive website ever So, after reading the FAQs here, I am now the proud owner of a brand new PhotoBucket account. I've uploaded some images and created a new thread thestampforum.boards.net/thread/2877/stamp-work-artI'm concerned -- are my images too large? Should I have posted thumbnails? When clicked, they jump to my photobucket. Normal? LOL. I guess I'm a bit of a nervous nellie today -- just looking for some feedback on 'best practices' Kirk

Not as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure what you mean by "jump to your photobucket" but they appear full-size in the posts.
Carry on. More, please.

Kirk the images are automatically resized to fit the forum page so answer to your question is No the images are fine. No need to thumbnail Kirk, the bigger the better You can also use your Flicker account, I just suggest Photobucket but any image hosting site will work, some however often contain links to the dark side of the interweb . To stop your images having a direct path/link to your account you can set your photobucket to private, always a good ideal if you also keep personal photos and documents, I don't think anyone would want to see any of us in a speedo or bikini , All though I did hear rumors that a certain member that shall remain secret has all the girls talking about him

Great images!
Images of stamps can never be too large in my opinion.
Keep up the good work.

As we all know, size does not matter. (Sorry I couldn't help myself)

Beautiful stamp, Kirk. Size is fine, the Forum only carries the link line, so size does not affect bandwidth.
I do consider other members with slow bandwidth, but mine seem to load OK and Australia has now dropped to 44th? in the world for speed, so should be OK
A few hints you may care to, or not, adopt. 1. Have The Stamp forum link, and the Photobucket link in your quick launch bar, top of your screen. 2. Click on Photobucket ( navigate and set all image folders to "private") 3. When organising folders name them in Alphabetic, Algeria,Azores,Cinderellas,Saint Pierre et Miquelon etc etc makes it easier in the years ahead Assume these images are there "forever" otherwise TSF loses all you work if you move or delete them.
If you load say 6 images to say folder "TSF auction" load them, then go to "Library" highlight each link to each image then "copy" Photobucket has a irritating way of losing one of a sequence of images, even when set to "latest loaded first" You can end up clicking through 20 images before finding the correct one.
It is normal for TSF image when clicked to go to Photobucket (PB) but if you select "private" setting on all folders snoopers do not get to look at all and sundry on your account. (unless you are OK with that)
There is a limit to the number of folders, so best to be prepared you can put "subfolders" in under each folder.
So, say for the Carribean, you best would be to set a folder called "Lesser Antilles" then sub folders for Grenada, Redonda, and all the myriad of stamp issuing islands there Then "Greater Antilles" Bahamas" or whatever.
I reckon PB gives an excellent service, very few negatives (thus far)
Update: easier route to images ...go to "recent uploads", then select images from there I have 3,300 images in PB, that equates to 33% of my allowed capacity.
To set "private" Load PB Library Edit settings select "private" Update

Maybe this should be obvious, but if we move an image to a different album/folder within our photobucket account, it will break the link? (At the moment, all stamps are in one folder for me, but then I'm new to using pb.)

Good Info, Rod. I appreciate the feedback.
For the most part, I consider everything on the Internet to be "public" but I have been experimenting with folders and privacy settings.
I have installed the PB App on my phone which bumped my storage from 2GB to 10GB. That also created a Private Folder named 'Mobile Uploads' but it was very clear in giving me the option of uploading photos from the phone. So I will experiment with that. It might be nice to have that as a 'backup.'
As for TSF images, right now I have just the one folder, but I will consider/create subfolders. And I appreciate the tip about treating them as a 'permanent collection." That is one thing I've seen on other boards -- people post a photo, then delete it later and "break" the thread. So I won't be doing that :-)
Thanks again.

(At the moment, all stamps are in one folder for me, but then I'm new to using pb.) Yes, unfortunately the link will become broken. Ergo, my hiearchy in PB is a real dog's breakfast, unlike my norm. But useable. Best to start organised if you can, from now on.

I don't store images in anything like the quantity that Rodney does, but if you have multiple thousands of them, Google Images is something you might want to consider. They don't have a fixed image count / memory requirement limit for smaller images, at least. Any image with the large side measuring less than 2048 pixels doesn't count against a storage limit - you can have an unlimited number of them posted. As the landscape shifts, I'm sure things will look different a couple of years from now - Photobucket might have higher limits, or no limits, or it might disappear / get rebranded / whatever, and the same could happen with Google Images.
One limit with Google Images is with the image size you can link to on your URL. Kirk's recent posts with the big images are fantastic for looking at engraving details, and Google Images limits you to a URL that fits entirely on your screen (including the loss of areas due to menus & icons and so on. You can download the full-sized image separately, but that's not what you can link to. Leastwise, I haven't figured out how to! Still, it's working fine for me and the size of scans I usually use.

I can set the forum to allow large size images, might be a option. Only thing is you might have a delay for the image to load.
If any interest I can adjust the settings for the weekend and allow members to see if they like.

It might just be me, but I like the fact that the board auto-adjusts the bigger images so they fit on my screen, without needing to scroll to see the rest of an image that's larger than my screen resolution can handle all at once.

I am happy with Photobucket (PB) at the moment, based on my scan size, I'll max out at 10,000 images. Then I shall pay for extra, or whatever is current then. If PB folds, then I am comforted somewhat with that ability to visit dead "old sites" that Steve posted once, I cannot recall the link. But nothing is forever, it will possibly outlast me.

I'd like to resurrect this thread to add a few comments about my experience with Photobucket (Pb) over the past 3 months (since the initial post). I'll start with some pros and cons.... PROs: - good user interface
- privacy settings are clear and seem to work well
- good info from rod222 made configuration simple (especially the advice to plan a folder hierarchy in advance)
- ample free space; room for thousands of pics (more than I will ever have)
- nice smartphone app with option to sync every picture to Photobucket (do not do this if you're a Hollywood starlet)
- I always browse in multiple tabs; it's very easy to copy/paste Pb links into TSF posts.
CONs:
- site uses tons of tracking cookies; expect 12 to 20 to load every time you open Photobucket (I use Ghostery to block trackers; see image below)
- expect at least one email every morning with a sales promotion (with a little persistence, you can opt out of the emails)
- if you are purchasing prints, Pb is one of the more expensive sites.
CONCLUSIONS: - Photobucket is a business; I don't love the marketing and sales emails, but they're a minor issue in exchange for the ample free space I receive in return.
- I don't like tracking cookies that target me for advertisers, but I use AdBlock and Ghostery to kill those anyway.
- I'm glad I switched from Flickr which I never liked.
KirkS P.S. This image shows the trackers being blocked by Ghostery as I compose this post.

Nice Post Kirk! I was thinking of you a few minutes ago, I was trying to locate Zipper's "Lock Seal" in the Scott Specialized catalogue you, so very generously gifted to me. (5 years ago?) I have used it continuously, and is becoming dog eared. Share your opinion with PB Was not aware of the cookies, I have never had advertising foisted on me, that I am aware of. I'll have a look at Ghostery. I am close to coming to my limit in PB, it will be interesting where to go after that.

Thanks for the Ghostery tip. I just added it. Do you (or does anyone else) know if this affects the income a friendly site might generate?

Thanks Kirk, that explains why sometimes advertising takes over when I try to upload images and freezes the whole thing.I tried to add Ghostery but nothing happened that I can tell.Jack set up my PB account and walked me through the how to.If not for him I would not be able to share. If it takes the normal human five minutes to figure something out it will take me five hours.I spent five days getting my digital microscope to function and still have to work on getting better pictures. The joy of being born in the stone ages.

Simple solution open a second PB account. You may need to created a second email, you could use a free yahoo email or gmail and just start fresh.
