A block of four of these things is being offered by Eastern Auctions in its Feb. 20-21 auction. The block is of the "scarce" orange tree variety. Eastern estimates a value of $500. It does not show a catalog number. I watch auctions carefully and do not recall ever seeing this label. Now it has turned up twice, including the "scarce" orange tree variety. I don't know what to think. It's Lot 520, at stampauctionnetwork.com/zm/zm84426.cfmWell, this is a first. I'm quoting myself! That's one way of running up your posting total. The above block appeared in Eastern Auctions Feb. 20-21 public auction. It had an estimate of $500. Guess what? It's back, this time with an estimate of $600. Included is a block with green trees. Presumably, that is the less scarce version. The auction is June 19-20, for you collectors of obscuria. Lot 301.

I'll put this one here for now, for lack of a better place to put it (and not knowing exactly what it is). It seems to say that it is for an aviation meet in Nice, France in April, 1910. Not sure if the stamp is offered by a newspaper as a souvenir, or if the newspaper sponsored the meet. Anyone? Can you imagine the excitement of an aviation meet in 1910? Those were some daredevils. For the sake of the G@@glemonster, I'll include the text: l'aviation a nice avril 1910 offert par le journal l'eclaireur de nice

That's neat. I've seen a few very early pictures with more than one plane in the sky at the same time. I assumed some artistic license at work on the part of the stamp designer with five or more planes flying over the crowd at once, but maybe not? Whether there were two planes, or five, it must have been something to see.

BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS [BEA]...........PART 1
BEA took over both Great Western and Southern Air Lines and Scottish Airways on Feb.1st 1947 and with it their Air Letter Service. Until 1951 when the first stamps were issued, a hand struck Cachet was used , initially for each airport and later a permanent type. The Letter service was offered between Penzance & the Scilly Isles to Stornoway and Glasgow. The values were written in manuscript. Later, other routes were added to the service including London and Manchester.
16th January 1951
The first stamp issues were printed in Photogravure by Harrison & Sons Ltd, Perf 14½ in sheets of 24. they show the BEA badge over a map of Great Britain.
Later in the same year a price rise and lack of a new stamp meant that the first issue was surcharged in various ways. A handstamp was used initially in London while at other airports in manuscript. The Provisional issue below was issued on May 14th, 1951.
A number of varieties can be found with the above issue including sideways and inverted surcharges; Missing surcharge; Surcharge in violet Blue; Surcharge at top of stamp; etc.
25th November 1953
This second issue was printed in Photogravure by Waterlow & Sons in sheets of 30, Perf 13. it shows the BEA logo and Coat of Arms.
To be continued.........

BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS [BEA].............PART III
4th October 1961
This 6th issue was in the following values/colours and of a simple design. [When I have found copies I will update the post].
1/- Red 1/ Blue 2/7d Green
26th May 1964.
This issue was printed in recess by Bradbury Wilkinson in sheets of 20, Perf 11. Shown in the design is a Hawker Siddeley Trident. Whilst most of these BEA designs have merit, I am quite enamoured with this particular issue.
1st May 1970.
This issue was designed by F.H.K.Henrion and printed in recess by Bradbury Wilkinson in sheets of 20, perf 11. A presentation pack was also produced with informative insert card. Depicted is the more up-to-date BEA badge and Logo.
15th February 1971.
This 9th issue came about because of Decimalization and is of the same design and details as the previous issue. First used during the Postal Strike of that year !
1st July 1972.
This issue was designed by the BEA Industrial Design Department [can't you tell !?] and printed by Bradbury Wilkinson, Perf 13x13½. Shown in the design photo is a BEA Hawker Siddeley Trident.
You will notice 2 different shades above. The example on the left is the one I have seen in most cases and it is possible the other example is from another printing. I see no evidence of a colour changeling and the stamp is in very good condition. Keep a lookout for other shades.
The following set was issued much later but I yet to find out the details. Other stamps of the same design but with other values have been seen by me. I will add any information here unless I am beaten to it but another poster !!
Enjoy !
P.S. The item below is NOT a BEA Letter Stamp but it does fit within these last 3 posts so I'll add it here. Also, because I was in shock earlier today when I found out the price of others being sold on eBay !!

Ages ago, LondonBus posted some Israeli PATCO cinderellas. Vance has one in its March 16 auction. PATCO The "stamp" is used. Vance suggests a value of C$45 or more. It is lot 3259 at Stamp Auction Network.I have no interest in this thing.

Western Airlines (Airletter) 1982-1984 16 different stamps were issued. Here is one of the earlier examples. I am not sure if this is a booklet pane of 3 or just a block of 3.

1933 PROVINCIAL AIRWAYS, West Country Air Service.Provincial airways was set up in 1933 after the collapse of International Airlines Ltd. They organized a West Country Air Service between London and Plymouth in Devon via Southampton. It was short-lived however and only one return flight was made. The Company did open other routes in 1934 but it did not prove profitable and they closed in 1935. Labels were produced for the London-Plymouth route. Information about the airline, the routes and the Labels is sketchy and contradictory and research is ongoing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provincial_Airwayswww.philately.cyng.org.uk/SAP-Provincial.htmlI have some items and am also hoping to add a First Flight cover in the near future (this coming week !!). More to come another day, I'm flying off to bed !! Londonbus1........

I'm bumping up this thread after acquiring the cover below for my Aircraft on Covers collection. I'm not sure how to classify it (comments and suggestions welcome). Seems like private post label might work best. It is 1LC2 in the list of sixteen labels issued by WesterAirletter service between 1982 and 1984. These were once listed in Scott, but later withdrawn. There is a good review and explanation of these items here:
The label offers an excellent image of the Douglas DM-2 biplane and the cachet includes a reasonable likeness of a Farman F.40 biplane.

I am surprised Canada doesn't have very many private Cinderella stamps. Since there are so many small Commuter and private Airlines in Canada. Not for postage but for advertising. Maybe they don't because there aren't a lot of choices up there.

Maybe they don't because there aren't a lot of choices up there. That, plus the fact that it costs money to make these things. Everyone is counting their nickels these days. (Pennies have disappeared unfortunately, so nickels it isa now.)

Not sure where I picked up this little 1971 mail delivery label. From someone on this forum no doubt (sorry if I've forgotten!). Let's assume because it has an airplane that it's meant for air mail, shall we?

PORTSMOUTH, SOUTHSEA AND ISLE OF WIGHT AVIATION LTD. [P.S.I.O.W.A.] Here's an earlier booklet pane for these stamps (imperforate around the edges of the pane) mentioned by Londonbus1 earlier in this thread plus the booklet for the later printing (you can just make out the perforated outer edge). The company still exists as Portsmouth Aviation Ltd but now an aircraft engineering company. Portsmouth first print by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20200415 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr

1933 PROVINCIAL AIRWAYS, West Country Air Service. There seems to be a large variety of proofs and other material available for this short-lived Air Service, shown earlier in this thread by Londonbus1 . These are examples that I have: Scan_20210206 by Daniel, on Flickr This is a flown cover from 26th November 1933 Plymouth to Southampton. Rather amusingly, it is undermined by the cancellation slogan which reads 'It's Quicker to Telephone' !!! Scan_20210206 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

Highland Airways Ltd.Started in Inverness, Scotland, by Ernest Edmund 'Ted' Fresson in 1933 to provide passenger and freight air services between the Scottish mainland and the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland, and between their islands and was awarded contracts in 1934. The airline was taken over by Scottish Airways, then absorbed by British European Airways (BEA) in 1947 who, in turn, amalgamated with British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in 1974 to become the present day British Airways. The first cover is for the Inverness to Orkney Isles first flight on 29th May 1934 and postmarked Inverness for that date. Addressed to Dr McClure at Balfour Hospital. Another label, mint, is shown next to the cover. The second cover is for the Wick to Kirkwall leg of the Inverness-Wick-Kirkwall first airmail flight and is postmarked 1st December 1934 for Wick, Caithness. It is signed by Ted Fresson himself who was the pilot. The Highland Airways label is stamped 'Arrival Dec 2.35 pm'. The cover is addressed to John S Davis who was very active in airmail philately at that time and, is perhaps, best known for organising the Autogiro flights and various other covers at APEX 1934. Finally, there is a more modern postcard from 1994 commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 'First Pennant for Inland Airmail Awarded to Highland Airways-1934'. Flown by British Airways and additionally postmarked 'Kirkwall, Orkney 29th May 1994'. Scan_20210210 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20210210 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

GWR Air Service (Great Western Railway Air Service)Another short-lived air service. Started in 1933, it operated for a year before the Railway Air Service was formed by the big 4 railway companies; London Midland & Scottish, London & North Eastern, Great Western Railway and Southern Railway in collaboration with Imperial Airways. GWR was an authorised mail carrier on their trains and steamers but they had to get additional authority from The Post Office for the Air Service and the stamps. There were 2 routes; Cardiff-Teignmouth-Torquay-Plymouth and Birmingham-Cardiff-Teignmouth-Plymouth. Here is a mint stamp and a used stamp below, postmarked Birmingham May 26th 1933. Next to these is a 50th Anniversary sheet, 1933-1983. Below these there is a (rather dirty) complete cover Birmingham to Teignmouth, Devon with a GWR cancel on their stamp, Birmingham 22nd May 1933. The George V penny halfpenny definitive stamp is postmarked Teignmouth Devon for 23rd May 1933 for onward posting to Hele, near Bradninch in Devon. Scan_20210214 by Daniel, on Flickr

As mentioned in my GWR Air Service post above, Railway Air Services was formed in March 1934 by the big 4 railway companies; London Midland & Scottish, London & North Eastern, Great Western Railway and Southern Railway all in collaboration with Imperial Airways. It was a domestic UK service. Wikipedia states: 'in August 1946, the UK government formed the British European Airways Corporation (BEA) a state-owned airline. The airline was given a monopoly of scheduled air services within the United Kingdom and to continental Europe. From 1 August 1946 RAS operated all its services on behalf of BEA until it ceased operations on 31 January 1947 with BEA acquiring the RAS aircraft, staff and routes.' They did not produce any labels. Here are 2 examples of their mail. The top cover for Manchester to London dated 20th August 1934 and addressed to our old friend John S Davis an areophilatelist (see the Highland Airways post above). On the reverse, someone has written in pencil, 'probably unflown'! The second cover for London to Glasgow has a London FS Air Mail postmark, also for 20th August 1934. It has a nice Glasgow receiving mark on the reverse for 21st August. Scan_20210220 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20210220 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

North Eastern Airways From 1938, a cover flown from Leeds to London on the First Air Mail flight by North Eastern Airways. With a nice NEA label and hand stamp. The postage stamp has a machine cancel advertising the Empire Exhibition, Glasgow and is dated for 3rd October 1938.
