I'm going to write up a review of the Staples Better Binder at some point. I still love the Bindertek binder a great deal, but I need to mail order them, and I am a pretty impatient person. One of the things I like about the binder is how you can label the spine. Here's a picture of the spine on my Ukraine binder: What binder do you like, and why do you like them?

I like WHITE D-ring binders. My stamp den would look so gloomy and cave like if all the binders were a dark color.

Here's something else that's interesting:
Staples Better Binder with removable file rings:
Rather than have a bookshelf full of binders, you have a file cabinet full of hanging rings and you snap the rings into the binder as needed. I wonder if this would have any practical use in stamp collecting.

I'm not yet to the point where I need binders - I have mountains of stamps but nothing is organized to any level beyond the notion of putting everything from one country in its own baking tin. I do, however, have a good collection of mint Canada stamps that lives in a set of Lindner hingeless albums. Over the years, I've found various blank Lindner T-series pages (they come in all kinds of formats based on pocket size and number of strips) at reduced prices and once upon a time I found a wholesale batch of 10 binders (18 ring) that fits the T-series pages. So, I'm ready to be organized, I'm just waiting for the decade when I finally get there ...

Hi
I was/am using AccoPress binders. They came in 4 or 5 colors ( used red, green and blue ) and were great. Now they are pretty much non-existent and I need a few more. They were made of a thick material and did not get "sticky" like vinyl. The ones today are flexible and not good for albums at all.
I am looking for inexpensive non-vinyl binders to replace them. I need about 12 of them but $25 - $40 each is a little steep. Since I do no on-line shopping they have to be available in a retail store. Anyone know of such an animal?

Do you mean the cloth-style of binder that used to be common in the days before vinyl / plastic stuff? I found this one as the first hit on a search at Staples, I'm sure that more searching would uncover more examples. Multiple colours, $13 per each. Ryan

Hi Ryan
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to go to Staples and see what they have. I had bought one binder that was like leatherette but I do not remember where I bought it. However, the cloth binders are more acceptable. I never thought of it until you mentioned it. In fact I did not know they still made them.

Australia Officeworks (Woolworths) Vinyl 4 ring Binder (Australia has A4 format, slightly smaller than North America)
Why? Price : $4.59 each, 4 rings support the pages without "page lag" experienced with 3 ring binders Not very sexy, the vinyl crinkles after 5-10 years, but price suggests easy replacement Great for the Worldwide collector who needs a budget 100 albums and more. Not for the Specialist
Even with 4 rings, heavy pages (using mounts) the pages at the extremity farthest from the ring can touch the shelf, stamp pages remain pristine from what I can see.
Will not stand unaided when nearly full, need a $14 cardboard demountable rack that supports 2 binders in each space. These fit nicely in steel cabinets.

Wow, you guys have really fancy binders! As I sit and look at my shelf of regular notebooks of various sizes from various companies (I recycle all the time) and the books of various colors I feel so eclectic! Either that or I'm just too cheap for those expensive binders.

I don't know what kind of binders they carry but APS members can get a discount at Office Depot (both online and in-store).

I'm with reena, the only thing a binder needs for me is D rings.I often buy binders at yard sales at 25 cents a piece either for myself or Mom.After all they are only to contain the pages.I use sheet protectors on every page and 110 cardstock,if the binder can hold the stuff good enough.I pefer to spend my meager budget on stamps.

Hi Steve
I did not know that APS members get a discount at Office Depot (live and learn). Now that Office Max and Office Depot have merged I assume the discount is now for both stores.

I find there to be a trade off to almost every binder I have tried. I wish there was a place where you could build your own binder. The closest thing I have seen to the perfect binder was the Bindertek binder. But they didn't survive the "cat knocked my binder over" test. I had one in a slip case and the cat knocked it from my dining room buffet to the wood floor, about 4 feet. The slip case cracked open and the top rivet holding the rings in ripped through the cardboard.

I initially used Staples Better Binders for my Steiner pages, but didn't like them because they are flexible and would not stand up on the shelf. I find the We R Memories binders to be far superior for about the same price. However, if you want to pay a little bit more, you can't bet the Lighthouse Vario binders.

I went to look the We R binders. Though the outside of the binder is very nice, it appears the rings used on the inside are the cheaper binder rings. A ball and socket d-ring looks like this: The cheaper rings have that zigzag pattern on the end.

I use Superb Binders and Slipcases, from Collector's Supply House, Paris, Ontario, Canada. Web site is www.collectorssupplyhouse.com/s_acces/g_sbindersslip.htmThese binders are very nicely padded. A matched set of binder and slip case is $60. Not cheap, but high quality. Good people to deal with, too.

AirmailEd I took a look at their website, free shipping on orders over $50 for Canadians, free on $80 or more for US customers, but wait there's more. They use postage stamps.

Andy: I hope these are useful. They were taken with an iPhone, which I find awkward. If you need something better, I can charge up my digital camera and try that. I was unaware that rings are important until I saw your earlier post. I have no idea if my rings are high or low quality. However, they have seen many openings and closings in the last 21 years, and seem to be working fine.

21 years ago the new style ball and socket rings did not exist.
I find a lot of binders seem to skimp on the rings for some reason. If they're office binders, like the Better Binder, Bindertek or Avery, the higher end binders tend to have the better rings with the ball and socket closure and the smoother opening mechanism.
When it comes to craft or hobby binders, they always seem to have the cheaper style rings. My guess is that the rings must be pretty expensive, and even high end binders needs to make a price point, or no one will buy them. I wonder what kind of rings the new Scott 3 ring binders use.

AirmailEd- Nice Binders. I have a WW "classic era" collection on 6,500 Steiner pages. I've housed them in (from Staples) Avery Heavy Duty One Touch EZD Binders. I've been satisfied with them as a functional strong binder, but something was missing. A little class. Recently, I've picked up some Lighthouse Classic Vario G Binders and Slipcases. They really dress up the Steiner pages- or perhaps I just feel better about them.

How many Classic Vario G's does it take to hold your Steiner 1840-1940 collection?

Looks like it is pretty much 1:1- that is, one Avery 1 1/2" Binder with 100-150 pages will fill a Vario G. But if an Avery Binder isn't very full, then 3 binders for 2 Vario G's. I've ordered them (Vario G) five at a time for a discount. I'm going slow, as they are still expensive. Will take several years before the collection is mostly in Vario G's.
