I was wondering if anyone else is interested in seeing a comparison of the postal rates charged by different postal authorities. I thought that I would start by giving the postal charges from Sydney to either the US and the UK both entail air travel of about 12000 km (to LA) or about 17000 km (to London). For uniformity I have converted our charges to US dollars:  I hope that others will contribute similarly  |

Was franked at $2.50Oops. I see they have a 30g rate. Our rate change does not occur in Aust until 100g is reached. |

Finland will have new postal rates next week, and according to them first class rates outside EU will be:
* up to 20g (postcard) 1.10€ (1.26US$)
* up to 50g 2.50€ (2.86US$)
* up to 100g 5.50€ (6.30US$)
The real bummer is that starting next week everything thicker than 20mm is treated as small parcel (or as we Finns call it, maxiletter), and postage outside EU area starts at staggering 12.20€ (13.98US$) and 250-500g rate is very humbling 22€ (25.21US$)..... Thanks to this I've had to do some heavy adjusting on how I'll do my stamp swaps this year. No more 'box swaps', sigh.

What's a gram? metric Kirk, 28 grams in a oz. Many have rounded it off to 30 grams to = a Oz A little bit of info for you is that the US 1 dollar bill weights 1 Gram. |

100g - 200g will cost $10.30, but wait if you use a meter you save a buck. So much for promoting stamps. 200g up to 500g will be $20.60 or again save $2 if you use meter.

I always try to use the high value stamps such as the $10 whale, $8 grizzly or $5 moose. This way the person will receive some nice stamps that have a good resale if they decide to do that, helps to ease the cost of mail. I also do my best to hunt down old discount postage, I often pick it up at less then 50% face this makes postage cost at half price I will use meter if sending a item to certain regions that are known to have mail go missing, this seems to make it less attractive. I rather sure delivery over a nice cover. But when I look at it, for the price of a meal at a mom and pop diner,I can mail a package across the world. Its really not that bad when you think of it. |

The figures so far are pretty re-assuring...er... for us Aussies I always thought that some of our international rates were horrendous, now I see that we don't have it so bad - pretty good for a small population! |

Well, my question was partly in jest. But I admit, as an American, I don't think in "grams" :-) Most of my international mail is a letter or postcard and goes for the 1-ounce international rate of $1.15 Rarely, I might have to add $0.98 for the 2-ounce rate of $2.13 I just bought 2 panes of the Global Forever Sea Temperatures stamps. I think I read that some people are having trouble finding them, but the post office across the street from my house had them. Of course, the population here is almost 400 people, so you'd expect to find them in such a thriving metropolis ..  |
