@anglobob posts so many exceptional West African cancels and such, he makes me forget just how exceptional they are. Here is one I am not buying, but it is a fine example of how more typical, still quite nice, West African covers look; for me, it is a needed reminder.

Stamps were first issued in 1944 .Senegal,Ivory Coast,Dahomey,French Guinea,French Sudan,Mauritania,Niger and Upper Volta were provided with the general issues inscribed with French West Africa.Trying to find different postmarks from all the territories is quite interesting. Most common are those from Senegal and Ivory Coast.Stamps from Mauritania and Upper Volta are more challenging.

The perfect place to show off my one French West Africa stamp on a postcard to promote an issue of Playboy magazine in 1981. It contained an interview with 'Tarzan The Ape Man' actress Bo Derek. Although not specifically mentioned in Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, it is conjectured that they were set in French West Africa. Oddly the country name is in English! A selection of stamps issued before 1944 by individual colonies but postmarked in a different colony.Stamps from Senegal and used in Mauritania and vice versa seem to be a little easier to find.

Very few of my used Mauritania stamps were actually postmarked in that country. Nearly all are from St. Louis, Senegal. France did very little to develop any infrastructure, and Mauritania was just thrown into independence. Slavery is still practiced there.

Yvert 17 on a letter sent in 1946 from Ivory Coast to Marseille,France with 12franc postage due stamps--possibly to pay the difference for sending it registered.According to Dallay catalogue,20fr was the rate to send a registered letter overseas.

Stamps from 1945 Tirailleur series. YV20 used on cover from Ivory Coast with a slogan cancellation proclaiming Abidjan to be the second port in French West Africa. YV19 used on cover from Niger with an uncommon cancellation from Magaria.

Yvert 37,issued in 1947 in a series of 19 stamps depicting aspects of local life in the colonies of French West Africa. This particular stamp shows a young girl from Mauritania. Both covers were mailed from Dahomey, one with an unusual hexagon cancellation from Godomey, the other cancelled at Kandi.

1945 Tirailleur series.YV 6.7.8.9 Four of the lower value denominations on a letter to France. These are a little harder to find on covers and catalogue prices are higher than the high face value stamps in this series. Sent from Dakar,Senegal on 16 July,1946......with the month inserted upside down on the date-stamp.

More examples of the 1945 Tirailleur series on 3 covers Two are to Cameroun from Dahomey and Dakar,Senegal and one to France from Saint Louis,Senegal. These were obtained from 3 different sources and all are sent to a Monsieur Establet.I have also found some other covers to the same person who appears to have worked in the Ministry of French Colonies.

Since you already know the answer, salentin, I have corrected my post to reflect a nice block since - A plate block is a block of stamps from the edge of the sheet which shows the plate or cylinder from which the stamps were printed. Variations do exist from Country to Country René
