Italy's General Italo Balbo made four international flights, or aerial cruises ( crociera aerea) from 1928 to 1933. The 1933 flight was billed as Rome, Chicago, New York, Rome, but it made many more stops along the way. The destination of Chicago was chosen to coincide with the Century of Progress. The Decennale refers to a tenth anniversary, but the anniversary is not for the flights, but for the tenth anniversary of fascism in Italy. The postage stamps related to the crociera aerea are gorgeous, and probably familiar to most, but I just ran across some wonderful cinderellas for the 1933 flight that were new to me. and a detail: and a detail: and a detail: and a detail: Supposedly, these were intended for the pilots to spread around on the flights, affixing to mail as they went. There were 24 planes that left Rome in 1933. Must have been quite a sight to see. There may be one more design. If someone has one, I'd like to see it. Covers, too?
