Here is a pretty little pair of stamps from the 1890 issue, overprinted locally with 'One Cent':  SG209 (left) and SG208 [overprinted on SG187 and SG186, respectively, issued in 1888] Any corrections or additional information always welcomed. |

This stamp sold on eBay a couple of weeks back (not to me). Decided to post this here, so we can compare it to the ones I bought, which I will scan and post here, when they arrive.  This one was signed by Stolow on the back. These stamps were initialed before use by RM (Robert Mather, Acting receiver general). My catalogue notes, "Uninitialed stamps are remainders, a few sheets having been found". This one looks to me like the initials might have been cleaned off. Sold for US$245 (about AU$270) |

These stamps were printed in sheets of 24
3 wide, 4 deep on each half sheet.
I cannot ID this stamp, appears not to belong to the left hand half sheet.
I do not have the right hand half sheet.
Going by the ornaments, it will be from the third row down
either 3/4, 3/5, or 3/6.
One can see the difficulties experienced with the left and right outer lines, going in amongst the ornaments.
(lines made up entirely from type)
Whoa! "ONE CENTS" That should be easily Identified by students of the stamps.
I am guessing text is Printers Type Alphabet "Modern" 12pt.

Scott catalogue notes; there were 24 types of each value. They were intialed before use "R. M. Ac. R. G." being the initials of Robert Mather, Acting Receiver General. Attachments:

The initials are in black on the 1 cent and in red on the 2 cents. An alkali was used on the 4 cents stamps, which, destroying the color of the paper, caused the initials to appear to be written in white. Attachments:

Why are the "SPECIMEN's" postmarked?
Like the way you always name your scans well, however you have these under Guiana not Brit Guiana?

That issue was perforated specimen before release,
"to prevent fraud on the government", notes Scott.
They are available without being perforated specimen, but these are much rarer,
(and I don't have them).
I didn't think the image file names would be relevant, or visible.

Ha ha - that's Rod snaffling the images! Right click "Save image as ..." and the file name it recommends is the one you used when uploading your image. How many images now, Rod? 400,000 or something like that is what I seem to remember ... Ryan |

Actually Ryan, you are incorrect, if I right click, and save image as, I would get something like #452667sgety$ff For images hosted offsite, the "right click, save as" procedure will suggest the file name that was used for the image on the host. Doing the same on a ProBoards-hosted thumbnail will provide a number/letter/symbol combination as the suggested file name. However, if you expand/open the thumbnail and then perform the "right click, save as," the file name used by the original poster will be the one suggested. |

Why do I always think FRENCH Guiana and not BRITISH Guiana?? What did I miss?? (History class perhaps? ) A while back I learned that there were originally 5 Guianas. I only knew of three of them because only three issued stamps! Dutch Guiana became Suriname, British Guiana became Guyana and French Guiana is now an overseas department of France so they use French stamps. Spanish Guiana became a part of Venezuela and Portuguese Guiana became a part of Brazil. There is a European Space Agency launch site in French Guiana (another thing I didn't know). Ryan |
