On November 10, 1775 the Continental Congress authorized formation of two battalions of Marines. Samuel Nicholas, of Philadelphia, was commissioned a captain on November 28, 1775 and charged with raising the Marines. The initial recruiting rendezvous opened at Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, and by early 1776 the organization had progressed enough that the Continental Marines were ready for their first expedition -- New Providence Island (Nassau) in the Bahamas. On March 3, 1776, Captain Nicholas landed his battalion, took the British fort, and captured a large quantity of powder and arms for Washington's army. I imagine that this stamp, with its depiction of Tun Tavern, was probably produced in the 1940s. If anyone has any background on the stamp I'd appreciate hearing it.

I was doing a search through all of the Cinderella threads, and I was interested to discover that the very first Cinderella thread was this one, started by our own Steve Tomisek. And more than that, it had over 650 views, but no replies and no likes. Seriously? Four and a half years and 650+ views and not a single "like"? Well, as a Marine myself, and a proud recipient of one of these very same Cinderellas from Steve right after I joined TSF back in Nov-2016, I feel that I need to resurrect this thread, give the Devil Dog his due, by giving him both a long-awaited "like" and a response! Semper Fi, Steve, thank you very much for your kindness to me, and thanks for making this post. You are a credit to us all!
