Austrian First Day Cover commemorating the 1972 Ausstellung "Spätgotik in Salzburg" - Late Gothic in Salzburg, Austria in 1972 quote from Stamboards member was the best so I am listing the details here. "The stamp on the cover depicts a Christian martyr Saint Hermes (?-120), designed by Adalbert Pilch after a detail from a painting entitled Primus und Hermes (1449?) by Austrian Renaissance artist Conrad Laib (active ca.1440-1460), engraved by Alfred Nefe, and issued by Austria on August 21, 1972 to publicize the Exhibition of Late Gothic Art, Salzburg, Scott No. 927, plus an image of the relevant detail from Laib's painting. - nethryk"

Three first day covers from Austria, a series of Special Fountains. Art treasures in Austria - Roman Fountain Special postage stamp series The first stamp from this special postmark series shows the popular "Roman Fountain" on the main square in Friesach. This fountain is described as the largest and most beautiful complex in all of Carinthia. Unfortunately, neither the architect nor the sculptor is known. The fountain belongs to the style of Mannerism and was completed in 1563. The original client is also known: Leonhard von Keutschach, one of the richest men in the country at the time. He had this fountain, which is made of stone and bronze, made for his magnificent Tanzenberg Castle. It is also not known why the fountain had to leave its first place, but it has been standing on the main square of Friesach since 1802 and can be admired by everyone there. Art treasures in Austria - Convent Fountain Special postage stamp series The second motif of the series shows the lead fountain or convent fountain of Heiligenkreuz Abbey. In the middle of the so-called fountain house, which served as a washroom for the monks at the time, lies the well made of lead. It is a total of two and a half meters high, its diameter is about ten meters. Nothing is known about the history of the creation of this well either. Only its Renaissance forms point to a creation from the middle of the 16th century. century. More than a century passed before the fountain was first mentioned in writing. And this reason is a sad one: On the occasion of the Turkish invasion, the well - probably by farmers - had been chopped up. But already a few years later, the lead fountain was restored and received - with the bowl and the cross made of copper - its current appearance. Art treasures in Austria - Leopoldsbrunnen Special postage stamp series The third motif of this series about art treasures in Austria shows a very special jewel of Austrian bronze sculpture art, the Leopoldsbrunnen in Innsbruck. This fountain has some special features: It is not only the oldest equestrian fountain and the oldest free-standing bronze monument in Austria, but also the first fountain in Austria that shows a horse without support only on the hindquarters. The client of this monument was Archduke Leopold v. Austria, whose enthusiasm for art went so far that he melted cannons for casting wells in the middle of the Thirty Years' War. This work was created by Kasper Gras (1622 to 1630), in cooperation with the experienced casters Heinrich and Friedrich Reinhart. Originally, the fountain stood in the Hofgarten on the Rennweg, was then even dismantled and stored until it was finally set up in its current place in 1894. ( the notes are from the Austria forum website, buts in German, so I have translated and posted here. link : austria-forum.org/af/Wissenssammlungen/Briefmarken/1972/Kunstschätze_-_Römischer_Brunnen )

Bob, rod222 gave some information on these in this post. There will be further revelations in the forthcoming issue of The Cinderella Philatelist (not written by me by the way). They were lottery related but not actual lottery tickets. They were given away, not sold, by the Lottery companies to encourage the purchase of Lottery tickets. The two names are separate and are there to appeal to parents with children or those with girlfriends having either of those names. They were not a scam. The pictures depict unidentified women and children. Daniel

The design is very reminiscent of the Switzerland 1923 - 1925 airmails with their art-deco flair. I love all of the stamps from this era designed that way. I'm sure there might be other similar country issues I'm unaware of in this regard. It certainly was a point in the history of design where it was displaying a new perspective on the possible future... Rob
