Wow! Zipper. Beautiful paper indeed. (Envious) The last cover has a beautiful Airmail Livery, never seen before. The first Cover, addressed to.......... Théodore Champion (14 February 1873 – 31 August 1954) was a Swiss cyclist, philatelist and stamp dealer, who was added to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1937. He was born in Geneva and took French citizenship in 1948. The letter is addressed to his stamp shop. Spectacular! PS: Your second cover down, carries a lovely thumbprint (Probably indicative, and a result of, a steamy climate in Northern Sumatra. )

Your Pink Postcard leaves Padang, west Coast of Sumatra, across the Indian Ocean by Mail Steamer, up through the Suez Canal, across the Mediterranean Sea, to Genoa, thence by Steam Train to Amsterdam. All for 7½ cents. Trip 14th July to 9th August. Not bad, not bad at all.
Could not solve the "D103" marking, Amsterdam or Padang? anybody?

Netherland Indies - 1883-90, Sc 20
Netherland Indies Sc 31 10c on 10c gray lil - 1900, July 1 Very nice, René! Two good candidates for the postmark calendar there, although one was just yesterday.... just missed it! I have also noticed in my Dutch Indies some very nice, legible postmarks which are good candidates for the Postmark Calendar or other further research. I find it interesting that certain countries seem to have a much higher percentage of legible postmarks than others. But Dutch Indies is definitely one of those, at least in my limited experience.

I hope Jon (Blaamand-Norge) sees this as he might like it for his next "envoy" but I shall wait for his response as these are inventory, not non inventory for the others, incl. St Lucia

Beautiful stuff indeed, René 😀 I certainly agree with Chris about the difference in apperance of legible postmarks from one country to another, and the Netherlands Indies is absolutely among the better. Would probably deserve a dedicated club for enthusiasts 😊 Thank you yet again renden for keeping me in mind when it comes to postmarks!!

More Netherland Indies and postmarksSc 126 1915 More beautiful posts, René, thank you for reviving this thread! And look at those postmarks! On the side of a "cautionary tale" with respect the Netherlands Indies (Dutch Indies in my old albums), I should mention that from my personal perspective, the Dutch Indies stamps are not only known for their propensity for nice postmarks (thank you, Jon blaamand for weighing in on that point) but also for their misbehavior when soaked! Please see below an image of one of the inadvertent victims of soaking in water to remove hinge remnants and residual gum: Ned Indies, Scott #123, 20-cent blue, in a condition which is in stark contrast to the one shown by René. Why, you may ask? Well, as the Scott Catalogue notes: "Water Soluble Ink: Some values of types A11 and A12 (the Queen Wilhelmina is the A12 shown here) and late printings of types A6 and A9 are in soluble ink. The design disappears when immersed in water." This is one of the few cases, in my opinion, when it comes to "water soluble" or so-called "fugitive" inks where Scott has gotten it right and taken the trouble to point this out in the catalogue. Unfortunately for me, I failed to read this warning prior to soaking these stamps. My only slight consolation is that the design did not, in fact, disappear completely due to the soaking, so I still have this specimen as testament to my foolishness and lack of preparation....

Thanks for the warnings Chris, I was not aware. I actually soaked a few some years back, and had no problems, but I guess it might be different ink from issue to issue and maybe even between printings. Scary. Just another argument to collect postmarks, for whom the stamps and postmarks are better kept on the piece anyway 😊

Just another argument to collect postmarks, for whom the stamps and postmarks are better kept on the piece anyway 😊 Thanks for your response, Jon. Yes, you have hit on the problem precisely--not all of the Ned Indies stamps of the designs in question are in the water soluble ink. Some are and some are not, so soak at your own risk! If you were able to do some soaking, so much the better, but use caution. Soaking works well probably 95% of the time it is used to remove stamps from paper or clean up problems with hinge remnants, etc. But in those 5% where it does not work, all sorts of unfortunate things have happened, at least to me, including complete or partial disappearance of the stamp's design, or serious fading or changing of the colors, making it clear that the stamp has been soaked. And of course, as you point out, leaving the stamps on cover in the first place will avoid all of these problems!

I kindly ask those who have a catalog that lists it, the quotation of this stamp which, to be precise, should be a 'salary stamp' of the Dutch Indies. Thank you in advance. Ludovico
