Help In Posting Images of Album Pages

The library has a relatively new HP scanjet scanner.

I notice that your 300 dpi is a large image.  What do I have to do to get an image that size, or a little smaller. Is the posted image size dependent on scanner settings, photobucket settings, or what?

There is a write-up on how to insert an image.  Maybe the scanner guru (Rodney?) can write-up on how to initially scan stamps and album pages.

I know that this is not rocket science but I cannot seem to get a grasp on doing this.

I'm going to walk you through step-by-step the process I use. I do use Imgur.com, not Photobucket, so I hope you'll be able to finesse that. Alternatively, open an Imgur account. I'm going to include all the steps. Hope this doesn't offend you.

For this example, I scanned an album page of SCADTA consular stamps. Do I remember correctly that you like SCADTA stamps?

I use a Canon MG2400 all-in-one printer. I scan on the automatic setting, which is 300 dpi. So, first I scan the page. At that point, the image file shows these numbers in Properties:
6.35 MB
2,484 pixels wide
3,384 pixels high
300 dpi

I then use the crop tool in the Canon software to remove the margins. At that point, the image properties are:
4.97 MB
2,002 pixels wide
2,951 pixels high
300 dpi

Next, I optimize the image, using JPEG Optimizer. Optimization reduces the size of the image, making it much more acceptable for the Web.

On the home page of JPEG Optimizer, I click the Browse button. The File Upload window opens. I navigate to the file and click it. I click Open. That takes me back to the JPEG Optimizer home page. I set Compress Image to 90 and Resize Image to 1,500 pixels. I click Optimize Photo. When it quits working, JPEG Optimizer takes me to the optimized photo. I right-click in the photo and save it to my computer.

When I did this process, my image properties were:
933 KB
1,500 pixels wide
2,211 pixels high
96 dpi

On a monitor, 96 dpi is usually fine. You might need higher resolution if you're showing engraving details. But the higher the resolution, the more slowly the file will open for others.

Next, I open Imgur.com. I have an account there, so my user name appears automatically. I mouse over my user name in the upper right, and select images. In the new page that appears, I click Computer in the upper right.

A File Upload window opens. Navigate to the file and click it. Click Open. The image file is uploaded to Imgur. You'll see it. Click the uploaded image. It opens in a new window, with a selection of links on the right. Click the link under BBCode (message boards and forums). That is the link used by The Stamp Forum. Clicking the link copies it to your computer.

The Stamp Forum cannot display an image 1,500 pixels wide. It reduces the image automatically. So, when I upload the test page, it reduces the image width to 861 pixels. The image size isn't shown in the image information. I'd estimate it at 400-500 KB.

When you follow this process, write whatever you want. Put the BBCode link wherever you want.  Paste it in using Ctrl>V. (That's for Windows. If you're using Mac or Linux, perhaps someone else can help you with pasting.) I'll put it here:

Try to navigate your photobucket to here, and play with settings

200dpi  should give you a large TSF image with the right setting

Thanks a lot for your help.

My wife just mentioned that we should look in Goodwill or Salvation Army store. There may be scanners since a lot of them had to be replaced going from XP to Win 7/8.

Question: With your scanner do you have to edit image margins? If not, it says do not get an HP Scanjet (too expensive anyways).
