Just a scanner, and a file naming structure, and windows explorer, is the best inventory in the world example: scan a cover, name the file Country / year of issue / theme or Scott number "United States 1972 Apollo ScXXX" etc etc

I use Excel spreadsheets to maintain my inventory. I haven't used it but there is a free inventory program for Widows-based systems called Stamps2GoAssistant that might be of interest to you.

Hi astp007
Since I do not have EXCEL I use WORD tables. I wrote a few Visual Basic programs to maintain the tables. Another solution is the old Microsoft Works Spreadsheet. I did not use that because of the lack of "detailed" screens. The best choice, in my opinion, would be Microsoft ACCESS database application. In lieu of that, EXCEL would be an excellent choice for a "cheap" inventory program, and it would be customized to your needs.
An alternative to MS EXCEL is Open Office.
I have in the works a standalone conversion of my WORD programs. Since I was just learning VB.NET I stopped until I could resolve a few problems. It can be finished in a short time if you are interested.

I received the below announcement today regarding Stamps2Go's updated inventory program. I am still using Excel to track my collection and have no experience with the Stamps2Go Assistant but thought some of you might be interested in checking it out. Announcing a new version of Stamps2Go AssistantStamps2Go Assistant is a program that is designed to help people organize their stamp collections, while making it easy to buy and sell stamps at the Stamps2Go website. It has been available as a FREE download ever since April of 2006. And now there is a new version. Version 2.0 of Stamps2Go Assistant has the same features as previous versions ... but has been developed to work seemlessly with recent Microsoft Windows operating systems. If you are using Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista, this is the version of Stamps2Go Assistant you should be using. Installation is quick and simple, and our download page contains instructions for migrating to the new version while preserving your previous data. You can download this new version by clicking the purple button labeled "Click HERE to download Stamps2Go Assistant" on the Stamps2Go home page (the page you see before you log in). Or ... you can go to the download page by clicking HERE. For those of you who are not familiar with Stamps2Go Assistant, here is a brief list of some of the features... - Keep records of your stamps and other philatelic items on your computer. - Create as many "collections" as you like to organize your stamps. - One screen provides an overall view of your collections, the stamps in each collection, and details about each stamp. - Include your own scanned images for each stamp (images not included with program). - Easy to add, edit or delete stamps. And multiple stamps may be updated at the same time. - Drag and drop stamps from one collection to another. - Reports show you the quantity of stamps in your collections, as well as the values you have assigned, and the selling prices (if you are selling any of your items). - Detailed help pages, including context-sensitive help by hitting F1 from any entry field. - Makes it easy to sell your stamps at the Stamps2Go website, with automated download and synchronization features (including image uploads). - One-click access to the Stamps2Go website to shop for stamps you need for your collection. - No pop-up ads, nag screens, or other nuisances - this is a fully functional freeware program. - It's totally FREE ... and future updates are FREE too! The download page provides sample screen shots, some additional information about program features, and includes installation instructions. If you are a current user of Stamps2Go Assistant v1.82 or earlier, we recommend that you upgrade to this latest version. It's a great hobby - see you soon at Stamps2Go Paul & Matt Herman Webmasters Stamps2Go.com

I am on an Apple iMac 🖥 and iOS. I have tried many apps, both specific to stamps & general databases, and I tried many! I finally settled on 'Numbers'. It is Apple's free spreadsheet. I find it easy to insert new stamps and have columns set up they way I like it. I don’t include photos, as I make a pdf of my albums.
My only problem is trying keep it up to date all the time!
Edit: what was with all those comma's in the last line?

I also am a Mac user (switched in 2000), and I've been using an easy, flexible, and very functional database program called DEVONThink to organize my life for many years. I am now using it to organize my stamps. It is not free, but well worth the money in my opinion. It can store just about anything (PDFs, webpages, movie files, images, spreadsheets, etc.). It also integrates beautifully with different scanners (automatically creating searchable PDFs, for example). Love it.

I use StampManage. I prefer the interface over EZSTAMP and less expensive. It includes Scott numbers and images but not 100& complete. Some areas are much more complete than others. EZSTAMP seems to be much more complete with excellent support but I chose cost and interface. You can add info to database. I had been using excel but my scope is much larger now so did not want to spend as much time working in Excel.

I think it would be very inspirational for other Mac users (like myself)

Another nice feature of DEVONThink is that it can be synced across different computers and to the iPhone (so you can carry your entire collection with you, in your pocket). Depending how you set it up, the changes you make are pushed nearly instantly to all your synced devices. Here is a link to the web page: www.devontechnologies.com

Never thought of cataloguing my stamps in it back then, as I hadn't gotten back into stamps. Maybe I'll take another look at it. Of course just about anything can be stored in the cloud, so it available anywhere & on anything. Edit: I'll pass on DEVONThink. I'd rather spend the money on stamps!

I used to use Stampcat for years but now that I'm seriously working through my collection, I've found it much easier to simply use Excel. I've created a separate page alphabetically and although I've only completed about 3,000 stamps, I'm very pleased with the ease and quickness of using Excel. I'm currently just sorting and putting them into stockbooks so I wanted something quick and easy. This way my friend who is helping me can use a different computer and stockbook for what she's working on and as I transfer her work, I simply transfer her Excel inventory at the same time to my own work.

The other aspect of Stamp Manage is you export everything to Excel. None of the data in the database is locked.

I use Stamp Mate. But I haven't really worked a lot with the program, but I kind of use it anyway!!!
The thing is that it can import pictures and data from the fantastic online site Colnect! I use Colnect to register what I have, want and what I can exchange.
Stamp Mate import all the data.
It has the possibility to generate a lot of reports witch can be exported to excel and other formats.
You have a lot of possibilities with the program, but I have not explored all yet as I'm to busy register my stamps online.
I think there is a trial version and there is a mobile app so you can take with you your want list everywhere.
