Saarland, MiNr. C31, from 1920, an overprinted Bavarian issue, 7-1/2 pfg. light green: My AFA catalog lists this issue as not having been officially circulated, while Yvert&Tellier treats it as part of the normal series.

This stamp had my attention a while, maybe because stoltzpup has it as an icon. Finally found one I really liked. When it comes to ugly stamp design, no doubt everybody has their favorite. Meet mine.
They spent money—many of the stamps are two colors and this one is three—but the result is smudgy, with red and black overlapping the blue. Colnect says Pierre Marie Alfred Montader designed the entire series. Huge effort. He must have been furious about the smudgy look. ‘I’ll never work for them again!’

Hi Aaron, Hell indeed, The tragedy of 1933 (Black Friday) Google the Gasometer explosion in Nine Churches (Neunkirchen) We had a similar "gas holder" in our town in Somerset. I share your opinion, I do like this series, the simplicity, for some reason they bring to mind Van Gogh, esp the 5 mark.

sorry to disagree, but have to say I quite like kasvik's 'dislikeable' SAARLAND stamp - for me it oozes soul - you can almost taste the words 'heavy industry' - the atmosphere is real, smelly and hot. The colours push 'night time' into your face, and in a sense you're there, listening to the sound and fury - it's kind of John Martin on 'speed' ;-)

The stamp reminds me of the Blue Brother's 1980 opening scene with the camera panning the industrial works in Gary, Indiana.
