Hi all! So I have zero scans to show as I have just recently made the decision to collect this topic. My plan is to collect stamps with a book pictured on them and also those that are based on a book or book series. I love the hunt and I will admit, I love sorting stamps (I think I am a bit crazy) so I am looking forward to making some surprise find in box lots or other means. Might also experiment making some cachets and making some custom album pages. Hopefully in the future I'll have some actual content to share.

From a discussion in a Newsgroup 2000
Regarding Eric Alstrom's question about postage stamps honoring books - S correspondences from Luxembourg had lovely stamps of historical bookbindings and I recall that several years ago, stamps were issued to commemorate the Bibliotheque Nationale of Luxembourg. Back in 1982, when living in Paris, I discovered a stamp which had been issued honoring "la Reliure" (bookbinding). It was engraved with a rich dark umber ink on ivory background. France often honors the arts of the book, as well as writers and artists, in its commemorative postage. And on money, too! The newest 50-franc note, issued some years ago, featured Antoine St-Exupery, his airplane and the Little Prince, as well as the elephant. Is anyone designing a stamp to honor the centenary of the Guild of BookWorkers? Paula Marie Gourley

Rod, I knew you'd find some! I love love that of the cat and rabbit. I will have to track that down. I was thinking that some stamps recognizing the art of book making would also be interesting (may even paper milling etc). Lots of potential, it is so invigorating to be collecting something new. I'm up to 5 that I have found searching my hoards. I'll scan once I get a bit more.

Hi Katie, Consider mounting with a little story for each stamp, makes your collection interesting and saleable later. There are a lot of stamps that refer to books, but the book image is missing, so will make your collection a little harder, but that's OK. Here are Ooooodlies of books on Cinderellas (Elitist collectors would be advised not to go here) thestampforum.boards.net/post/32276

If I were attempting to do a Thematic on Books, I would start at the very beginning with William Tyndale, the man who started it all, brought the English Language to the English, which spread throughout the world. Without Tyndale, we would have no Shakespeare, no Hemmingway etc & etc. Very hard to find him on a stamp, only one I can find is Cayman Islands 2011 For any that may be interested (Narrated by Melvyn Bragg) "The most dangerous man in Tudor England" www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p019rn3qwww.caymanpost.gov.ky/portal/page?_pageid=3561,6705424&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTALI cannot get the link to load

Rod, I think maybe you should do this collection as well!! I do want to weave a story (how appropriate right?), as I am a history buff as well. I am in the gathering phase right now, having just made this decision about 2 days ago.

You may find this site interesting www.graphics-stamps.org/10aBiblePrinted.htmlI definitely have the 1968 NZ 3d bible stamp in my collection The centennial of the Maori Bible issued on 23 April 1968 is commemorated by this stamp from New Zealand. The Bible was translated into the Maori language by missionaries sponsored by the Church Missionary Society. The first Maori New Testament was published in 1837 and the first edition of the full Maori Bible was published in 1868, which is commemorated by this stamp. Since then, there have been four revisions of the full Bible at intervals of 21 years, 36 years and finally 27 years up to the 1952 edition. The New Zealand Bible Society has a vision for a new translation of the Bible into modern colloquial Maori (New Zealand Scott #408).

On June 6, 1974 the U.S. commemorated the centennial of the Universal Postal Union with a set of eight 10c, perf. 11 stamps with letter writing designs taken from famous works of art. This is from the painting " Boy with a Spinning Top," by Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin in 1738.

Here's something that isn't found in the Scott catalogue but is in Michel. This is a 1934 postal tax stamp which was mandatory on all picture postcards. The funds were for the benefit of a "culture fund". The same design with different colour and denomination (oops) was issued in 1932. Ryan

Kate,
Just saw your thread today. What a great idea for a topic. I recently joined the American Topical Association and read through my first issue of "Topical Time" cover-to-cover. I seem to recall a brief article about a woman who collects children's stories on stamps.
This topic has so many tangents or sub-topics that occur to me: stamps honoring authors of books, religious books, scientific books, fiction, etc. Do you plan to narrow your topical collection?
I found that when I started my topical collection of Judaica, I just put my hands on anything and everything, but there is so much room for specialization that I eventually narrowed my collection down to Holocaust-related material and portraits of Jewish people on stamps.
If I find any interesting book-related stamps to share, I'll scan and share them here on the forum.
Best of luck to you!
Jeremy

Well, it's almost been 2 years since I read through this thread and now I'm back ... with a little more direction in my collecting and an accumulation of stamps to support my latest topical interest ... graphics on stamps. At first, with some incentive from this thread, I started snagging stamps picturing books, but then found what I was most attracted to was printed or hand-written text on a stamp, whether on a book, on a newspaper or just on the stamp itself. As I regularly read the ATA's bi-monthly magazine, I discovered the Graphics Philately Association within its pages ... a veritable font of new ideas and suggestions for stamps to acquire. This time ... I will make an effort to scan and post a few of my faves ...

I also have a literature (fiction writers) topical going. I've amassed most of the pertinent USA issues and many international novelists. I would welcome any posts like the above GB/James Bond and Jane Austen posts, that depict specific works. Below are just a few of the issues I've obtained. Now I have to get busy on creating some album pages for them. Russia, Scott #5822-26 (1989) James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans" Ukraine, Scott #725 (2008) Nikolai Gogol United States, Scott #4702 (2012) Edgar Rice Burroughs And a cinderella souvenir sheet, from novelist/stamp collector Lawrence Block, that came with his book, "Hit Me."
