Is anyone able to pronounce Iso for me? the vowel o, is like i in bird, so is ISO "Issur" ? The "Ö" sound is something that doesn't really exist in English. Same with some other sounds like "Ü" from German, another sound missing from English. Linguists define them by tongue position and lip shape (among other things). Consider the following - "bat", "bet", "bait", "bit", "beet". All 5 have the tongue towards the front of the mouth and the lips aren't rounded - as you go from "bat" to "beet", the tongue gets progressively higher in the mouth. Then consider "boat" and "boot" - the tongue is towards the back of the mouth and the lips are rounded, and "boat" has the tongue lower than "boot". "Ö" and "Ü" both have rounded lips but the tongue goes towards the front of the mouth, and this combination is not found in normal English ("ö" does get sort of approximated by "ir" in "bird" but it isn't the same thing - "ü" gets approximated by adults with silly baby talk, I guess). "Ö" has the tongue in position like "bait" but the lips are rounded - "Ü" has the tongue in position like "beet" but again, the lips are rounded. Ryan

Thanks Ryan. I experienced linguistics when studying Thai in Bangkok at the American University Alumni I found it a better route to learn to read first, when I associated a sound with a Thai letter or word it remained easier to recall. The "glottals" etc were difficult to get around.

de61 and guyana1230 got my attention with their Sweden weirdness, and all the other weirdness. I’ve seen Isö-cancelled oddities before and wondered, what-the-hell? TSF posts have chewed on this for a while. rod222 made the likely connection to the British counterfeiter Clive Harold Feigenbaum.
Here’s my two cents. Isö a small island in Bråviken, a Baltic bay east of Norrköping. Isö has a few holiday homes. I suspect its normally uninhabited. Why Feigenbaum or someone liked to cancel their Sweden forgeries Isö, we probably will never know.
There is an exceptionally useful Wikipedia page on Feigenbaum; not entirely unsympathetic. Active in the 1960s through 80s, he is best known today for his counterfeit stamps of fantasy countries. He’s the source of much of the fantasy stuff on the forum. The would-be Sperati was industrious and creative, but mostly got himself knotted in legal trouble. Well, he had me wondering for years.

Pretty wallpaper, These have been around for some time, some look reasonably professional, others especially the Churchill and the footballers have a crude amateurish look. Why comment if you have nothing good to say, just skip these postings and comment on what you do like. I am sure you collect some items that others could be rude about but hold their peace instead. We all have different tastes, if we didn't it would be pretty boring.

I fully agree with Alec (Vicking) and Rende. In my view these "issues" go even beyond the "wallpaper" word. Their aim was just to steal money from ignorant collectors. Off course, everyone is free to spend his money as he likes, but we should be free to say what we think about. After all, this is an American-based site, and the Freedom of speach is protected by the US constitution...

Oh no! Not again! Please let’s respect what other’s collect. Many of the complaints mentioned were also said in the USA about the 1892 Columbian issues! To each their own - if it makes them happy, why ruin their fun? No one is forcing anyone to collect ISÖ stamps, so why try to push someone to NOT collect them? Peace out, my friends.

I'm totally confused by the reactions to this discussion. I read through all the posts and I didn't see anything suggesting that someone can't collect these. In fact, I found the conversation interesting. Perhaps I'm missing what Guyana1230 was offended about, but it appears to me a fairly extreme reaction to want to be removed from this forum. Having said that, I've sometimes become irritated by something most people would not be irritated about. We all have those days.

By definition Cinderellas are not postage stamps and it is clear that later issues, at least, are not Local Post stamps either. From this thread alone no-one is being fooled into buying them thinking otherwise. Probably most general Cinderella collectors will have some of these, including myself.

I wonder if other hobbies have similar Cinderella type items. Like maybe collecting casino slot machine coins, or commemorative medals that are like coins?
