I promised myself that my worldwide airmail collection would only go through 1950. Then I discovered the absolutely amazing issues of the French Southern Antarctic Territories. Of course, the forerunner issued by Madagascar was issued in 1948. But, I simply had to continue with some more issues through 1965 because of their engraved beauty.

Not geographically part of Europe, of course, but this seemed the best place to start this thread. French South and Antarctic Territories 1959 - Part of series "Birds and Coat of Arms" A gift from Stoltzpup last year. French South and Antarctic Territories - 1959 - 40f- Birds by Mick Taylor, on Flickr Edit: I just noticed that my scan cut off most of the perforations. I will try and get a better image.

Joint block issue between the TAAF and Monaco, as Prince Albert I (grand-father of the current one), an oceanographer in his own right, had explored the Kerguelen archipelago and a few places there are named after him:

TAAF block featuring Southern Ocean whales (with a map of Antartica, but not on the stamps, so it does not technically belong in the map-on-stamps thread):

Totally agree with you here. I recently discovered the beautiful French engraved stamps of this era, and I'm all over any associated countries that feature the same engraving. Great stuff. I owe a lot to Renden for bolstering my new French collection. I'm working on my new France and French territories album today while watching some football and my wife is baking cookies. It's a good day.

Agreed; the stamps produced by TAAF over the years are some of the most beautiful and 2019 was no exception (although I may be biased),
Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri)
French Antarctic Territory issued 1985 - Michel No.196, Scott No.114
Happy collecting!

Not sure what took me so long, but finally caught the modern "bug" with a selection of FSAT/TAAF more science focused issues, this example from 1985 (Scott C92 / YT PA95) by engraver Jacques Gauthier, featuring atmospheric research:

This one really caught my eye, as I'm pretty familiar Andreotto's engraving work, but this photogravure delivers:

New TAAF souvenir sheet commemorating Albert I of Monaco, joint issue with Monaco, for his involvement in Antarctic expeditions: Fun fact, this is the only issue from 2023 on which penguins can be seen!
