Approximately 800 semi-postal stamps have been issued by Netherlands so I think a thread focused on them is warranted. This engraved, perf. 13.5x14 set of four stamps was released on June 17, 1948. The stamps, from left to right are: 2c+2c dark brown Hall of Knights, The Hague (Scott B185); 6c+4c green Royal Palace, Amsterdam (Scott B186); 10c+5c bright red Kneuterdyk Palace, The Hague (Scott B187); and, 20c+5c deep blue New Church, Amsterdam (Scott B188). The surtax collected from their sale was for cultural and social purposes.

This set of five was issued March 6, 1944 (Scott 149-153) with the surtax aiding National Social Service and providing winter relief. The stamps are perf. 12.5x12 and are watermarked (Wmk. 202 -- circles).

The surtax from this set of five perf. 14.5x13.5 stamps showing a child carrying a cornucopia was used for destitute children. The stamps were issued December 1, 1939 (Scott B118-B122).

I always enjoy looking at stamps that are absent from my collection. I believe that is a first day cancel on the 5c(+5c).

Yes, it's a first day cancel. I don't know if that affects the value in any way? There is also a CTO set with a 31 Jan 07 date stamp, which is listed at only a few dollars. Continuing the theme, here are B4 and B5, mint hinged. Both had a 5c surcharge for charity. (The apparent creases on the stamp are actually on the mount).

There is also a CTO set with a 31 Jan 07 date stamp, which is listed at only a few dollars. I wonder if these would be considered CTO's given their history They originally were valid until January 3, 1907 for the double normal value. The supplement benefited the Amsterdam Society for Control of Tuberculosis . The remainders were made invalid by a cancel " Amsterdam, 31 JAN. 07 10-12N" by the association's request. Perhaps given the comparable values and actual remainder stock, the invalidity made them much less valuable. Originally 1,000,000 of each were printed & this is the approximate tally 1c sold 400,000 invalid 600,000 3ct sold 180,000 invalid 820,000 5ct sold 230 000 invalid 770 000

The Scott 2015 Classic Specialized values the CTO set at $3; a used set was valued at $52.

The Scott 2015 Classic Specialized values the CTO set at $3; a used set was valued at $52. I have seen a notation that they were still valid for domestic postage only at face value until Jan 31 1907 Michel, SG & the NVPH don't give invalids any values? Yvert notes $2 ea I have seen dealers who wrongly advertise the invalids with the specific postmark as normal "used" for $30-$50/set

I believe that Scott's $52 valuation is for a used set of the valid stamps. I wouldn't think it possible to use one of the cancelled remainders. I just did an ebay search and there are more than a dozen listings for B1-3; all have the 31Jan07 postmark and only 1 listing identifies them as CTOs. I sent "you might not know but..." notes to two of the more prominent dealers and it will be interesting to see if they modify their listings. In the interest of full disclosure, had it not been for this thread I would have been unaware of the significant price differential between valid usage and CTOs.

Thanks for the info guys, it's really useful to hear from knowledgeable folk. Here's one of the 31 JAN 07 cancels (the right way up, so the stamp isn't...). Did many charity stamps have 'expiry' dates?

Did many charity stamps have 'expiry' dates? Many? I would say yes. Off the top of my head, Yugoslavia, Austria, Estonia, Slovakia, Saarland, Greece, Luxembourg and probably several others had "expiry dates" on charity stamps These dates would have varied from 1 month to over 1 year. Great way to check if postmarks are valid

Did many charity stamps have 'expiry' dates? Many? I would say yes. And, in fact, many countries had limited dates of validity for regular postage stamps as well. Michel's European catalogues includes the dates of validity for the issues that had limited ranges. As an example, I grabbed my Michel Europe Volume 1 and had a look - many major stamp-issuing countries once had stamps that "expired" ... Liechtenstein - yes Austria - yes Switzerland - yes Slovakia - yes (just a few WWII-era issues, though) Czech Republic - no Czechoslovakia - yes Hungary - yes UN offices in Geneva - no UN offices in Vienna - no So, postage expiration was fairly common once upon a time in Europe. In Switzerland, expiration dates continued all the way until 1964, whereas Austria stopped the practice in 1947 (although their schilling-denominated stamps expired in 2002 after the introduction of the Euro). Here in Canada, all stamps issued since 1859 (adoption of decimal currency) remain valid. Darn, I have a pile of 12d blacks I could use for mailing .... Ryan

Many of the older Dutch semipostals have the expiry date printed at the bottom of the stamp. I think they stopped with that in the 1950s. Until 2 years ago, all guilder currency stamps from 1977 to 2002 could still be used for postage, even though the Euro was introduced in 2002. All of a sudden they were declared invalid, which caused a huge drop in the value of these stamps. There were a huge amount of them (most of them stockpiled during the speculation period of stamp collecting) and the only real value was to use them on a letter. Now they are virtually worthless.

Up to about 5 years ago, I was still buying tons of stuff. I've finally calmed down - I've realized I'm never going to get everything organized! But while I was buying, I often looked through ebay.de listings (German eBay) and lots of the sellers were from Holland. I almost always got old guilder-denominated stamps on my mail and that kind of bothered me because I was hoping to get new Euro stamps, like I got from so many other countries in Europe. Because I don't get that mail from the Netherlands any more, I hadn't realized they had changed that. Ryan

Especially dealers (professional or semi-professional) had large stocks of these stamps, the byproduct of buying collections. As most of these stamps are not rare at all and are bought at a fraction of their nominal value, it is excellent for making an extra profit on the shipping costs. It is more or less the same with older mint American stamps from the 1940s to 1970s that can be bought at a percentage of nominal value. When the stamps were made invalid, it caused quite an outrage and a number of court cases, because you prepay for a service and all of a sudden you cannot make use of that service anymore. The reply from the postal service was that there was plenty of time to use the old stamps on letters and that they could not be made responsible for the actions of speculators. Many other European countries had declared the pre-euro stamps invalid in 2002.

Here is where I ended up this evening with all my Netherlands semi-postals gathered on one stock page. Earlier ones have been mounted in my Netherlands album while these later stamps still need to have pages printed. I don't think I am alone in sometimes thinking I have a lot of a certain type or group of stamps but when I finally have them gathered in one place, there aren't nearly as much as I think there are. I used my Scott Catalogue which was a mistake because not all of the stamps have a picture and the designs can vary so much even within a set of 3 or 4 stamps with Dutch semi-postals that it takes a long time to identify them.

In the interest of full disclosure, had it not been for this thread I would have been unaware of the significant price differential between valid usage and CTOs. Indeed, there are price differences for the Netherlands 1906 - Tuberculosis stamps and whether they had valid use or are simply CTOs and a considerable difference at that ;-)
However, for those interested in studying plate errors with this issue, those CTOs do provide a great opportunity for anyone interested in such a study as the mint or correctly used stamps might prove doing the same, financially unfeasible...

Whether on the saxophone, the keyboards or even the bass, just good fun...

Yes, the Netherlands Semi-Postals have some great sets as the examples shown by cursus .
Some of the other sets which I particular like are the Provincial Coat of Arm series (1925-1927), the Architectural series (1955), but the favourite has to be the Rembrandt series (1956),
Can you match the original Rembrant etching to the issued stamp:
- "Farmer with High Hat"
- "Young Tobias and the Angel"
- "Persian with Chequered Hat"
- "Old and Blind Tobias"
- "Self Portrait"
Have fun and happy collecting!

Great stuff Jack( banknoteguy )! The higher resolution images shows much better why this set is a favourite :-) What I especially like is that the stamps, just as with the artist's originals, are engraved or recessed printed. The scan shows these little Rembrandt gems to their fullest... Have fun and happy collecting! P.S. Your scan had me checking to see if my mint issues were also unmounted ;-)

The additional images are appreciated Morton(@classicstamps), but without any text, your intent is unclear. I want to believe though that you are in agreement with myself and Jack( banknoteguy ) and that these are indeed, little philatelic gems. If so, no doubt the engraver, a Mr. Samuel Louis (Sem) Hartz would be pleased with the acknowledgement. The stamps themselves were engraved with a 1:1 ratio in mind and as such, are meant to be facsimiles of at least part of the original works. For more on the artist/engraver and his work, one can read the "Sellos y artistas" blog here - Samuel Louis Hartz, El ArtistaHave fun and happy collecting!
P.S. I think that when I permanently mount my own stamps, I will use one of Mr. Hartz's fonts :-)
