In 1949 This "Second Austrian Balloon Post Flight" helped raise funds for War Orphans.
I got this in a dealer's box lot, along with many other tattered not-so-nice covers!

This cover commemorates the first balloon flight by an English woman, Mrs Letitia Ann Sage courtesy of balloonist Vincenzo Lunardi, on 29th June 1785. This cover was flown on a balloon piloted by Karen Coombes, and signed by her, on the 200th anniversary. The descriptive card is hilarious! Scan_20200528 (8) by Daniel, on Flickr

This one was carried out of besieged Paris in 1870 on a hot air balloon, the Vauban. Unfortunately it landed behind Prussian lines.

Auguste Piccard, 1884-1962, was a physicist, inventor, balloonist and explorer. His twin brother, Jean Felix Piccard, also a scientist, was also a balloonist and either or both was/were the inspiration for Star Trek: The Next Generation's Jean Luc Picard (recently in a new Star Trek TV series, Picard). Auguste was also the inspiration for Herge's Professor Cuthbert Calculus (see the image on Wikipedia) in The Adventures of Tintin. In 1932 he set an altitude record of 16,201m in Denbendorf, Switzerland. This cover was flown on a Montgolfier balloon in 1972 in Florence. Scan_20200503 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr

Another Aéro-Club Royal de Belgique cover (actually consisting of just a single sheet), this time from June 1937 for the 25th Gordon Bennett Cup for Ballooning named after New Yok Herald owner James Gordon Bennett Jr. With the starting point being Heyselstadium in Brussels. This cover was originally for the 2nd test flight on 18th June. Hence, the postage stamps are postmarked Internationale Avion... 18th June 1937 but, clearly, carried on the actual flight day. The Cinderella stamp is franked for the day of the actual competition, 20th June 1937. Belgium won the race for the second year running with a 2 day flight to Tukums in Latvia and a further postmark for Riga in Latvia is dated 26th June 1937. The pilot and co-pilot were Ernest Demuyter and Pierre Hoffmans. Scan_20200604 by Daniel, on Flickr

A couple of covers marking anniversaries of The Siege of Paris 1870-1871. Firstly, one from the prolific RAF series of covers which would have involved much logistical planning. Flown in a Hydrogen Balloon from Dover, it was not possible to continue the journey by balloon to Paris. So it was flown to Paris by 32 Squadron RAF, Northolt. Concorde stamp cancelled by British Forces Postal Service on 26th September 1970, The we have, on a reproduction Siege of Paris news letter, an item sent by balloon from Salzburg, Austria via Golling an der Salzach, Austria to France and then, seemingly returned to Salzburg. Marked as delayed due to poor visibility. Scan_20210209 (6) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20210209 (7) by Daniel, on Flickr

Balloon Flights - Poland It is to be noted, though that this particular cover did not actually fly by balloon because bad weather caused the flight to be cancelled.

An Aero Philatelic Club, London 50th Anniversary cover. Old school handwritten write up with hand-drawn maps. Postmarked in Jersey for 16th May 1973 but not flown to Manchester until 7th June. The cover was then balloon flown on 6th July by 'Serendipity' from Baslow to Bakewell.

Another E Demuyter cover, this time from 1939 for the 5th Gordon Bennett Cup that was supposed to to be held in Lviv, then part of Poland which was invaded by Germany on 1st September 1939 (and then by the Soviet Union on 17th September). This cover is dated IX Oct 1939 in Brussels. It features two Cinderellas and two Belgian postage stamps. It is signed by Demuyter, winner of the Gordon Bennett Cup on multiple occasions, front and back. See another Demuyter cover above in this thread. Daniel
