As mentioned, I decided about two weeks ago to throw together an exhibit for my stamp club's upcoming bourse. I've been accumulating train stamps for the last couple of years, no particular reason, some of them just looked nice. I was thinking of disposing of them (selling, not the other disposing) when it suddenly occurred to me I probably had enough for a 12 page exhibit. Did end up having to add a few more to fill it out, and then many were edited out, but it came together. Next weekend it will be unveiled, but thought I'd give you folks first look. Research thanks to a couple of hastily purchased books, the inter-web and some of you kind folks here and on SCF. The stamp images are scans, which I'm about to switch out for the real thing. Hope you like.

A successful day on all fronts. Good attendance, great exhibits and a few good purchases (to be shown elsewhere). Train exhibit won vermeil (actually all the exhibits won vermeil) and was well received.
Row of exhibits. The bustling crowd (well, as much as these guys bustle!)

Thanks all. You know the funny thing was, at the bourse, the kindly fellow who keeps trying to unload his basement on me (the pile of PHSC Journals last month WERE a terrific windfall) says, "Oh, I didn't know you collected trains! I've got a whole book of them I'll sell you." I respectfully declined, but honestly, do I have a sign on my back?

Thanks Jim. It was kinda fun to revisit this one. I just noticed, in the photo above of the bourse, the gentleman in the centre of the image in the blue and white shirt is stamp dealer John Beddows from North Bay, who we sadly lost last year. I bought a great many items from him, and he was also a great source of information. He's been sorely missed at bourses and auctions this past year. canadianstampnews.com/long-time-canadian-philatelist-dealer-john-beddows-dies/

Thanks for sharing your display, jamesw! The Trenton Stamp Club is having a show next month, and at last nights meeting, I was talking of displaying (sometime in the future) some stamps I have. But the rules are daunting. Pretty much all I have is mint, which is apparently a no-no! Whooda thunk? Certainly not me! It was mentioned that mint, used, covers have to be on each page, which is exactly how your railroad display is set up. I've copied it for reference in trying to make mine up. I may get there someday! That is one thing I thought I'd learn from seminars & presentations at this (or apparently most) clubs. But that isn't the case, everyone just buys & sells stamps.

Hey Brightonpete, and thank you! I'm no expert on this stuff by any means, but I always approach it as do what ya want! Basically if you can tell cohesive story using your stamps and covers then you've accomplished something. What they always say at the Barrie club is you are only competing against yourself. Ya the judges will have their rules, but they're made to be broken, right? And they (the rules) are always changing. I went to a talk this past year in Toronto by a British gent, whose name I don't recall, but he was a REAL expert on this stuff, and one thing he told the audience was was to go for it, tell that story, and even include non-philatelic material AS LONG AS it helps support the story and makes sense. And I think the main thing it to have fun with it. You got nothing to loose, and every time you do this, you learn more for the next time. And also, another member of the Barrie club only collects mint Canadian, and I believe he won Gold last year, and a couple of trophies! Never say never.
