Hello all, The missus and I are having a long weekend away on the Oregon coast. One of our favorite things to do while away is seek out small local historical societies and museums. I love the type of exhibits these usually contain - old tools and artifacts of daily life, prominent local families, etc. Today we stopped off at the Alsi Historical and Genealogical Society in Waldport. To my delight, they had a few posters showing local postal history. Specifically, it showed how often the location and names of post offices in the Waldport area had changed in times past: Post office chronology - Waldport by Mick Taylor, on Flickr The next photo, which unfortunately did not come out too well, shows a map of the locations (shown by the yellow triangles) of all the old post offices. (You can click through to find a larger version on my flickr page if you are interested.) Pity that they were just photocopies, but the postmarks were lovely. Again, you can click to my flickr page for a larger version. Postal Exhibit - Waldport by Mick Taylor, on Flickr I asked the museum guide why the post offices had been so transitory, and she explained that they were operated out of the house of the current postmaster, and also took his name. So when Mr Lutjens was postmaster, that was the name of the post office. Probably old news to the rest of you, but I never knew that this was a common practice. Man, I would love a nice collection of those postmarks. Finally, here is a photo of a lighthouse keeper couple, just because they look like such lovely folk.
