Being color blind, I can't identify stamps and their varieties on the basis of color, so it is always nice when a committee of experts have made the identification for me.

This 1861 3c pink Washington on cover was submitted to the Philatelic Foundation by its previous owner as the pigeon blood pink variety (Scott 64a) -- the expert committee determined that it was a genuinely used Scott 64 pink (Cert. 0215682 - 11/17/89).

If it is 1865, that would give it away, in the greatest % of circumstance. Pink was only issued in August of '61 and usually on cover between 8/61 and 2/62.

My understanding is that in some Western states, covers are known with 64's with later dates, but this one isn't a 64.

If you ever see an 1863, from the mid-south...Nashville comes to mind (I don't live there, but I work there, BTW), and the stamp looks pink, it could be a "Brooklyn Pink". which is rose, but is bright, and looks pink.
