The Phillips head screwdriver.
I vote for John P Thompson. Inventor of the self centreing Screwdriver.
Alas, Mr. Thompson could find no one interested in taking up his design.
He sold to Henry Phillips, and the rest is history
First used in production, on the 1936 Cadillac.

Henry Frank Phillips was a U.S. businessman from Portland, Oregon. The Phillips-head ("crosshead") screw and screwdriver are named after him.
The importance of the crosshead screw design lies in its self-centering property, useful on automated production lines that use powered screwdrivers.
Phillips' major contribution was in driving the crosshead concept forward to the point where it was adopted by screwmakers and automobile companies.
By 1940, 85% of U.S. screw manufacturers had a license for the design.

I have to go with Robertson,

They are the best screw on the market, the screw will stick to the driver, also the sizes are colour coded
each screwdriver size is a certain colour.

I wonder if the Philips would have been as successful in the states if Robertson had licenced the screw. If ford liked them it may have been the benchmark.
I find them the best and only use them.

Gotta side with Jack on this one. Aside from it's Canadian pedigree, the Robertson system is right up there with fire and the wheel!

I think I will have to send rod222 a Robertson screwdriver and a hand full of screws. Rod for next winter instead of hiding under the electric throw blanket. Get a nice 6 inch by 6 inch wood beam and take up the hobby of screwing and unscrewing. Admin has a few screws lose in his head  |

Admin and James. Yikes! Not seen that type before, looks excellent, my roadbike (Giant) is covered in the "allen key" bolts, don't particularly like those. Thanks for sharing. What I do like in Oz, a lot of house construction, roofing, fencing, are made with Hex Head "Tek" bolts, these are magic, fabulous with the German Battery screw gun. The screw gun often rounds off the Phillips heads screws, when used to force.

My Grandfather was a mechanic here in Canada during WW2. He was on enlisted due to having polio as a kid and had a bad limp. During the war effort in Canada a lot of Robertson screws were used. But not many drivers, so they had shortage of screw drivers. He made his own Robertson screw drivers, and was able to make the different sizes, How? He take a metal file and file the point off till it was a proper fit, then take a hammer and cut off some of the handle (very hardwood) cut a slot then cut file and insert it into the wood. |

AdminThat's a cross cut bastard. I employ a fine cross cut at my stamp desk, to sharpen the graphite of my 2H pencils.

That's a great name for a tool.
I keep some 180 grit sand paper for the same purpose.
A tip for you, the lead (graphite) makes a great lubricant for locks.
Just file away some of the lead and apply to your key then insert it a few times in the lock.
So where is this thread going
Anyone got anymore suggestions.
