KirkS , Take comfort in knowing that, while you are a loser in the eyes of Stanley Gibbons, your TSF family considers you a winner!

Congratulations jaysee ; that's a nice magazine. area66 is wrong or didn't understand your post -- it's not a scam. The catalogs were 1st place; I forget the prize for 2nd; and I think there were 50 3rd Places winners like you.

What I don't understand again ? I understand very well, it's Stanley Gibbons who make cheap marketing trick sending a letter that you don't win, but have a nice offer, the all thing was design that way, make a draw to catch peoples and spam them after with offer.

What I means is simple companies make draw to attract people's to register and give their email address . The focus of the draw is to get a database of potentials customers to sent publicity by email . This is what I call cheap marketing . This is why I never register because I imp the only thing I will get is more annoying advertising
I have the badluck to once purchase something from an eBay seller name Antony's stamps since they time he snap me at least 3 time a week I send at least 10 emails to eBay and they do nothing about it

Yeah I signed up for online coupons for the market, my spam folders always full and my cell phone rings twenty times a day. The worst part is I can't wade through the accent with the phone call to even find out who they are.I confess to being less than polite, much less. It is after all my phone.I put the number on the do not call list but it takes thirty days.

This conversation reminds me of the movie Cool Hand Luke (1967) when the Captain (Strother Martin) says "What we've got here is failure to communicate."
The first few posts, by KirkS and tomiseksj, constitute a description of the contest followed by a notification that he is not a winner, and that, yes, he will probably be on a mailing list (their Penny Red Anniversary Page). But you have to believe that with a legitimate concern like SG, he can most likely unsubscribe at any time and receive nothing further.
The post, by jaysee, sets forth the rules of the contest and the prizes to be awarded, the 3rd prize of which is "50 winners" of a one-year subscription to their monthly magazine (a genuine prize). 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize are all, undoubtedly, accompanied by the default Penny Red Anniversary Page, to which, I'll wager, an unsubscribe would be graciously honored.
Area66 is entitled to interpret the Penny Red Anniversary Page as a scam if he wishes, but I disagree. A "scam" is a con meant to trick a person into departing with his/her money under false circumstances. SG is a legitimate concern, and I'll wager purchases from their special offers are real and most likely accompanied by a return policy.

I never say it was a scam. I say it's old marketing tricks to get potential customers list. They are nothing wrong about this, all the companies do it. Was just a remark I throw like that. They make a draw, give the winners gifts, so no scam at all. But be sure if you register to a contest anywhere , you will have emails, sometime flyers or marketing phones calls. No one give things for free.

You're right, area66, an email capture page is designed to build the marketer's list, so that the marketer can reach you with further offers. The $ is in the list, for all successful online marketers.

I looking for a Gibbons volume 1 the queen Victoria, I keep getting beat at auctions or none at the stamp shows. I like value so waiting for the deal. Maybe they might make a online subscription. I have been using their sales as a source of finding the SG numbers. I have amassed a hoard of early GB that I have to sort, but that will be next winters project, or maybe the following winter

It seemed to me that area66 was saying the 3rd Place prize of a 1-year Subscription was a "plain cheap marketing trick." I wanted to reassure jaysee that the Subscription was a valid prize and not a trick. I never intended to debate the SG contest, email promotions, the catalog business, etc. I'm sorry if I gave offense. --KS

Crikey, anyone whom knows the Kirkster, knows he is politeness personified. It may well be a good idea for all members to consider putting "Opinion" in front of debateable views. and leave it at that, rather than try to push individual stances. In the thread, I could see both points of view, we should try to avoid disharmony if possible.
