I remember the milkman and breadman from when I was a kid too, in the 60s. We also had an eggman who brought around flats of eggs in the back of his station wagon.
Jeff, I knew you were an accomplished musician, but didn't know you were soooo well rounded, and connected. I'm jealous of both you and firstfrog. I'm a frustrated (and very poor) musician myself. But my children play very well, so I live vicariously through them.
And firstfrog, can we see a closeup of your avatar. You know I have a bit of an interest in these war tax things. Never seen one like yours.
Cheers!

The story I got is was printed" ad hoc" probably in a freight office on a wharf .Most likely had run out of regular issues and created this to process something so freight could be moved.Red is certainly not a common typewriter color so who knows.

I agree Jeff. I want one too! Went to my 'new' stamp store today on my lunch hour and asked the owner if he'd ever seen one. No, of course was the answer. Something else to be on the lookout for. And, Firstfrog, I do believe red was a common colour on typewriters. I have an old Underwood, circa 1915 (or thereabouts) and it has a lever to toggle between red and black. Used to have dual colour ribbon, but when I finally had to change it, many years ago, I could only find a black one, so now the lever is obsolete (but then, so's the whole machine!)

James said:James is correct !! I can still remember typewriter ribbons that had both a red and black "strips" {for lack of a better word}, so you could use the shift key to toggle between them. That was one of the earliest reasons and uses of the shift key on your keypad.

Whats a quid? I keep running into this word which I believe represents a monetary denomination? I seen this term while looking for a similar stamp they seemed to be priced in Quid? I'm an ignorant American I suppose? lol

I would have assumed you knew "quid" being American, besides currency, it is a wad of chewing tobacco.
Wasn't Rowdy Yates carrying on that disgusting habit, in "Grand Turismo" I seem to recall him expectorating everywhere in that film.

I also never heard it as a reference to chewing tobacco either? I gotta get out more...lol

Quid pro quo I just completed a quid pro quo with a VERY generous TSF member. Out of the blue offered me the Greece Airmail set free of charge, how extraordinarily generous, I managed to find an Australian mint LH engraved stamp, of similar coolness, to complete the "This for that"

Well that's right neighbourly of you Froggie, Alas! I am a hermit, I love my peace, wide open spaces with just critters and me, I's seen the freeways over your neck of the woods, with a million cars that's heart attack country for me, and try to get me on a plane Hah! I am a potential Jeremiah Johnson, sans the snow.

Beyond tobacco, a quid can be a mouth full of anything chewable but not swallowable, or at least not advisedly so, like week-old Christmas turkey. Such usage is not slang. (I feel like a ruminant this time of year).

Rod you could fly to Vancouver and stay a bit with BC then bike to Calgary visit with Ryan, after that 1000 miles or so, take a trip to Winnipeg and stay with me. I set you up with a good bag lunch and you should have the provision to make the trip to Jamesw. By this stage you probably need new tires or ass. Once you done with James you can head south to Froggy. You can then head down to California to Dave I think by then you be ready for a steamer back to Australia which you should be able to board in San Francisco.

PS: Shame we cannot put Members Country in our Avatar Space, it's always nice to see where collectors have their dens. There is a way to do this, and perhaps we could encourage Jack to encourage people to do it. Just go to your profile. On the main page of your profile, there's a text box available with a button called "Update Status." I put my location there back in the beginning, and just went back and tested to confirm that that's what you can do. That status update shows up right below your avatar. [thumbs-up icon again!] -- Dave

There's probably a steamer or two leaving from LA. If not, there's at least a couple of flights a month! (LA > Sydney > Perth -- or, if you're feeling especially adventuresome, LA > Dubai > Perth -- just 2 flights either way!!)

Rod: It is a little oblique, because there's another field that asks for location, but that info doesn't show up in the posts. So I just stumbled into it by accident while the board was in its launch phase.

Welcome FirstFrog, glad to hear from another Northerner. I am down in Mississippi now but originally from up North Adirondacks in Ticonderoga. I have been to Woodstock a few times, even made the Woodstock 94 anniversary concert. Only wish could have made the first one.
