I have always been a huge fan of meters and I find the pre-decimal meters of Australia to be fascinating and attractive. If you are wondering why my post-it-note notations are about, I catalog meters using the International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog. The benefit is that the catalog is free and online.

Thanks for that link smauggie. I can now catalog my limited meter strips. I hope I don't start going crazy on these now. Could be a new thing and we all know how that goes.(just an aside does anyone know why we capitalize I ? we don't capitalize you.)

That's funny, I searched for any Australian threads bearing the word "meter". Seems there is a regional difference in nomenclature.

You did exactly the right thing, Smauggie. Yes they are "Meters" in most collectors language. I needed to find the Catalogue in our Library, that's why I used the text string "Franking Machine" I could have searched re "meter" but there would have been more results to sort through. Example : I may have a weird Cinderella in my 1000's of images, I'll use anything that sticks out, in my text string the re-locate the fellow later, I'll use any writing, designer, printer etc. a simple "Cinderella unknown" will not work.

Nothing really to do with the topic, but the sight of smauggie's envelope brought back happy memories for me. A few months after this envelope was posted, I started my first adult job (on 1st February 1966), working at 314 Albert Street, East Melbourne in the CSIRO Head Office Library, and was there until 1992, with a couple of years off to have kids. I loved working there.

I loved working there. One of the most delightful aspects of my collection are the associated memories. Often, when looking through albums or sighting a stamp or cover, I flash back to the moment I first acquired or discovered that particular item. I guess my collection is the diary I never wrote down, but was rather indelibly inscribed in my memory.
