Very nice to meet all of you. I live in West Tennessee near the Mississippi River. I've been a stamp collector since the age of four and I'm very passionate about the hobby. I serve Linn's Stamp News as a contributor and author. I've contributed to the American Philatelist as a guest editor. 1873 - 1884 United States Officials are a favorite of mine along with the study of printing, paper and watermarks. My favorite literature includes Fundamentals of Philately, This Is Philately, Nassau Street, A New Approach to Stamp Collecting, Fabulous Stamps, King & Johl's U.S. Stamps of the 20th Century and many other works. I'm a quarter century member of the American Philatelic Society, serve the Memphis Stamp Collectors Society, the Tennessee Postal History Society and host a radio program. I'm always scouting for the unusual stamp or cover, something new with star potential. Best wishes for all. The Philatelist

Glad you found us Philatelist. Looks like you have a couple studies under your belt.I lack time I would like to devote to my stamps which at this point are more a seasonal activity.I thought when I retired I would find the time but it was short lived and I'm still out there playing with big boy toys.Just went to look at some bulldozer work today in preparation for a new playground. The phone keeps ringing so winter better come quick.

Nice to meet you FirstFrog. My son is an exec with Caterpillar in East Tennessee. He oversees the heavy machine side of the company in his region, i.e., earth movers, etc. Good luck with the playground project. Thanks for the nice note.

David your barking right up my tree! The only equipment we own that isn't a Cat are the tractor(Kabota)and the roller(Hyster) and the dump truck(Volvo). We are replacing the batteries in the excavator for the first time in seventeen years.I really must learn to use a digital camera and transfer photos to the 'puter. The D8 is still going strong as is the track loader.Yellow is a nice color.

Welcome, Philatelist. Sounds like you have a lot of knowledge and are not reticent about sharing. As we are all information junkies to one degree or another, you are going to be a much used asset around here.

....replacing the batteries in the excavator for the first time in seventeen years.... 17 years, wow ! That's a great testimony for a fine product.

Welcome to the forum, Philatelist! It is a friendly place here with a wide range of interests. Sounds like you have quite a nice library. Paper Chase by Alvin Harlow was a favorite of mine and fit in with my interest in the history of stamp collecting itself.

Hi The Philatelist Welcome to the forum. I don't know much about US Stamps but I've been told this is an unusually interesting one. Jim Jung

Hello JimJung. Interesting cover with multiple circular date stamps and Scott# 223 tied to the Corfu cds and cork stamp. It made it from Corfu to Queenstown within 11 days by the August 5th circular date stamp on the back. The post office honored the request by returning it to the "Dead Letter Office" on August 8, 1898. Perhaps the U.K. postal authorities would have held it for delivery once the ship had returned if Mr.Stevens hadn't requested it's return within 10 days. 30 days would have been a better request, if honored, allowing the vessel time to return. The Queenstown cds on the front, dated August 9th, indicates the return trip to Corfu. The "Return to the Writer" finger looks like a U.S.P.S. stamp. Corfu is a village in Genesee County, New York. At the time there couldn't have been more than a handful of residents in Corfu. Originally Long's Corner, The Village of Corfu was established in 1868. I'd spend some time researching the history of Corfu to determine if Mr.Stevens or the addressee, Ms.Braylon, could have been founding members of the village. The first post office was established in Corfu on February 2, 1839. Robert Miller was appointed as the first postmaster of Corfu when it opened, and the name of Long's Corner was changed to Corfu on his suggestion. Thanks for sharing this fine cover. Nice to meet you.
