More from the beautiful old handmade album I discovered in Mississippi. Natal is on the southern coast of Africa and borders the Indian Ocean. Natal is a former British Crown Colony. It's Capital is Pietermaritzburg. Natal united with the Cape of Good Hope, Orange Free State and Transvaal in 1910 to form the Union of South Africa. Thank you for viewing.

a couple of Chalon heads, SG 11 and SG 13 . The perforations on these issues are never wonderful and can cause issues, as can be seen on the 3d blue which has apparently had to be scissor trimmed .....the perfs are still there at the top, just not used. If I was to carefully remove the top tag it might improve the appearance of what looks to be (but really is not) a damaged stamp On the other hand, it does illustrate the problems of perforation. Thoughts?

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Alex vikingeck I would leave the 3 pence alone if it were mine. Trying to remove the bit of the neighbouring stamp could end badly.

Jeffs I saw that, but didn't care. It was that embossed one I wanted.

It is unfortunate the stamps are missing . Judicious treatment with tepid water and a fine camel hair paintbrush to remove the adhesions and old gum would improve the appearance, but ‘tis still a pity.

The recent posts about New Republic had me searching to see if my Scott International albums included the short lived country and whether I had any. There was nothing in the list of countries so I wondered if there may have been something in the Natal pages. While perusing my few dozen Natal stamps I stumbled across this one little gem I had totally forgotten I had. That is the problem of having a large world wide collection is that the odd better stamp gets lost in the bushes. This Scott 36 is a mint hinged example. As others have mentioned the perforation is always an issue on the early Chalon head stamps of Natal. This one has a pulled lower right corner but still a really nice copy of a rather rare stamp with a high catalogue value.

I have recently acquired a few Natal stamps for my BigBlue. Below is a nice bright well centered SG22/23 [Sc16 Violet]. I call it used with light cancel. Perfs look decent too. Crown CC watermark is also clear from the back.

And here is a pretty nice 3d Blue SG10, Perf 14. Decent centering and nice perfs. No watermark (as you would expect):

A couple more -- later QV issues, SG96 Half-penny Green and SG103 Sixpence Mauve, both with the Crown CA watermark although it is harder to see it on the Half-penny.

Appreciate good centring is v. important, so do members feel this ex boot sale example of an early Natal/Chalon 3d. should be binned? The absence of a wmk. and almost certainly perf. 14, suggest this is SG 10 from 1859 - 60, which has been shown here before - later examples of these 'Chalon' portrait values are overprinted POSTAGE. But - this is clean with good colour, perfs. quite good and not thinned, so some redeeming features, and thought people might like to see a very poorly centred example which presumably is less than common - after all, most folk have a normal stamp, but how many have one that looks like this? I had quite a bit of material from the boot sale early this morning - the usual problem is of course that whatever we buy, there's going to be a lot of duplicates and pieces already in the collection.

From me ( aka "the Hanging Judge" according to another thread ) This one gets a definite oK to collect. Centring is a contentious issue especially when some professionals in America, eg PSE, measure and grade to the nearest nanometre and price (upwards) accordingly. There are "badly Centred" stamps and there are "Misperfed" stamps, with a fine line between. The first lot are less desirable, while the second are collectable. There's no accounting for collectors quirky tastes but yours falls into the second and collectable category.

I would second that opinion. A decent stamp whatever you call it - I would call it mis-perfed.

sincere thanks to Judge Jeffreys and banknoteguy for their support, and of course I will keep this one - it almost has the appearance of an imperf. between vertical stamps sort-of-look - if only!! Apparently, the original Chalon portrait/painting - from which the stamp image was taken - now hangs in the British Embassy in Vienna - a truly massive picture which shows Victoria in her Coronation Robes - the colours are sumptuous. I always think the earrings look not out of proportion in the painting, but on the stamp perhaps a little OTT.

agree, lovely example of the 2d. olive-green first issujed 1887 - possibly either SG 106 or 107 .............. I thought you were going on to say, " .......... but not such a well centred image". only joking - a great looking stamp.

I concur with Alex (not that he needs it ) I think the stamp an interesting example of production difficulties, and unless I am delusional, would be a welcome addition to a specialized study / collection / exhibit of this issue.
