Wev'e all got holes in our collections of low catalog value stamps but cannot ever seem to find them. Please share your experiences with these little buggers. Here is one of my candidates for cheap stamps that are ridiculous to find. France 1926 Scott # 114 mint or used cat 35 cents. I spent years trying to find this stamp without any luck. As well a very good friend of mine who ran a brick and mortar auction house also searched for years in vain. Until recently I had only ever found 2 of them. I sold the extra on stamps2go last month for $7.50. After that I looked and found a cash of them over in Europe (ah the internet) I'm trying to corner the market. Perhaps it is just in the U.S. where they are hard to find.  |

Thanks for asking about this, Mitchell!
I have several worldwide collections I've picked up over the years (some of them pre-eBay, and definitely pre-Classic catalog) with the idea of hanging on to some of the material and breaking down the rest, and I've often wondered as I skipped over working up the minimum-catalog-value stuff whether or not there was something harder to find than the catalog value would suggest. If it's elusive, I'd like to get it in the hands of collectors, where it'll be appreciated.

Mitch don't shoot me, Canada O258 thirteen cent ram tank perf offical very hard to find stamp while not a thirty cent stamp its only a $6 ish stamp thats very elusive

Myself, I spent an inordinate amount of time looking for the Uruguay late fees (the ship design) and the various Spanish colonies in west Africa (an ongoing effort).

I've fussed about this one before on various places - the Spain Franco head 1.40 Peseta! Minimum Scott catalogue value both mint and used. I have literally kilograms of Spanish kiloware, and all I've come across so far is this single damaged copy. I have 1.40 peseta air mail stamps from the same time period, you'd think by now I would have come across this thing.  The 1.80 peseta green Franco head isn't much easier to come across - I do have a few copies, but again, it's a minimum catalogue value stamp and you almost never see the thing. I have more copies of the 2 peseta red (highest catalogue value of the set, pretty much the only one that isn't minimum value) than either of these other values. Ryan |

I do have my own "White Whale" stamp, although it is certainly not cheap. Since 1840-1940 (Bob) mentioned several years ago on his "Filling Spaces" blog that this stamp has a space in the Scott International Part I 1840-1940 album ( Big Blue), I have been looking for it. Bob- if you find another,let me know.  |

RyanI haven't really thought about this question before, but I think it's because I haven't done a lot of targeting of missing stamps. Mos tof my general Spanish collection came from 3 different Spanish collections I've bought, so I just consolidated them and stored the dupes. I just checked to see if I had these and it looks like I have an unused and used of each, which makes sense since one collection I bought was mostly used and another had mostly unused in it. Interesting thread to see how some things can be found in certain areas or regions while they seem to be elusive in others. I do know that many Spanish colonies issues are hard to find, even with min. catalog value. What I also see is a lot of short sets usually missing the same denomination. Mitch - I have quite a few French precancels, but have never seen large multiples like that, of any value. Thanks for sharing. For the record, I too am missing that particular stamp in my very humble WW collection. |

Regarding France 114, the posters above probably already know this, but I'll add it in for anyone reading along.
Collectors collecting to Yvert instead of Scott don't have this same problem, as the stamp is not listed under the so-called Blanc issue. There wouldn't even be a space for it.
The stamp is only found as a precancel, which Yvert puts in the back of the book. Scott notes at the end of the listings that 114 is precancel, only. This particular value is Yv#42 under precancels (preobliteres), and is one of five main catalogue numbers under the Blanc precancels (##39-43). Yes, in keeping with the topic, it is the lowest CV of the set. Whether it is hard for the French to find, I cannot say.
Yvert lists two major types of precancel overprints in this style, which account for some subnumbers, but our 114 is only listed with the thicker overprint in dull ink.
And for someone who wants to break out the magnifying glass, the lilac stamp printed to receive the overprint is only listed as a Type II Blanc, with two lines of shading in the drapery fold adjacent to the 'E' in FRANCAISE instead of one line of shading.
Perhaps some of this information will assist someone in tracking down a '114' on the Interwebz, from a seller who is not using Scott.

Azerbaijan #16, the oil well used. Mint stamps are easy to find, but I have been looking for a used single forever. Catalogue value is 50c for both mint and used.  |

Well, the 1923 Syria Scott 106c 25c on 10c green (error) is valued @ $240 in the 2011 Scott Classic 1840-1940 catalogue. Can't be a lot of them around.  |

Here's a twist on the topic. Regarding the Poland Miner issue of 1922-3. Scott lists a 40f (#173) and a 75f
(#175) but does not have spaces on even the Scott Specialty pages, Minkus does not provide spaces either.
I just went through all my dupes and cannot find one so I am wondering what's up with these 25 and 50cent stamps? Scott mentions that these two stamps had a minor modification done to them but were issued in the same year as the others.

Interesting twist. I don't think these are uncommon stamps to run across, but why they have no space in the Specialty album is beyond me.
For those following along without a catalogue immediately at hand, these are the eagle and fasces stamps that were revisited in 1923 as the lower values along with the miners (which were the higher values). The value tablet had a (e.g.) " f. 20 f. " but these two went with (e.g.) "40 f " dispensing with the first 'f'.
Sorting out the motivations of Scott's editors is no mean feat.

Mine is almost stupid but I been looking for almost a year for a scott #654 perf 11 single. I have a descent looking example on a first day of issue cachet cover from Menlo Park New Jersey (June, 5th 1929) but I just cannot find a single? I cannot justify paying a dollar's postage plus almost full catalog value on places like eBay. So I have that spot in my album staring me down every time I flip past it. *sigh* {That little yellow notation is just a sticky tab on the outside of the Vario page.}

 1922 Scott 173 40f violet brown & Scott 175 75f blue green ""Eagle and Fasces"Mitch- Are these what you are looking for.. The Steiner pages have spaces for them. I checked the Scott International Part I 1840-1940 album (Big Blue), and the spaces are not there for these denomination stamps. Not too surprising, as Big Blue is a "representative" album. However, I did find several copies of the 40f and 75f stamps inserted elsewhere on the pages.

Thank you, Antonio. Excellent idea for a topic. When I began my current collection, back in the '90s, my strategy was to just get as many cheap stamps as I could, up to 1940, and to just have fun. I concentrated on buying world collections, as well as one country collections, with quantity being the important criteria, after the date of issue. (I'm a bit more focused in my collecting now.) I actually went through my 'Scotts classic world catalogue 1840-1940', at the time, and counted everything under a dollar, so I could have a rough idea how many stamps I might be able to get easily, and how many to expect in the basic range from each country. I figured I should be able to collect 30,000+ stamps, without having to spend serious money. After a year or two of this, one day I realized, I still had none yet from Cilicia (French Armenia), even though my catalogue listed over 300 stamps with value under a dollar for this colony of France. I could understand why I had very few Italian States stamps, but why no Cilicia? So I searched eBay to see what I could find. I saw a few little lots come up, but they didn't go for pennies, as the catalogue prices would suggest. And I kept being outbid, so still have no Cilicia. The little buggers.  `Paul |

A correction. My apology. I exaggerated the number of low value stamps from Cilicia before 1940. It is just over 100, not over 300. After writing this, it spurred me to look again on eBay, and I won a couple of little lots, so now I have some. But I did have to pay well over the catalogue value to get them.  |

A weird thing happened. I got out bid on another little lot of Cilicia. But in the morning, when looked in my eBay again, I had won it. A couple of times in the past, when a winner changed his mind, the seller would come back to me with a second chance offer, if I was second higher bidder. Or if the auction hadn't ended, I became the high bidder again, after the higher bidder retracted their bid. But this was a new one on me, to win it after being outbid, and the auction ended. Before I was outbid, the price was at $6, and my bid was $22. The auction ended for $23 dollars, one increment above my bid. After I won it, it was exactly for the price I bid. I believe it should have been one bid over third highest bidder. But I didn't question it, as I was just thankful to get it, and paid it. `Paul
