Mitchell! You are the one! Thanks to you, my collection has one less "difficult to fill" empty space. My gratitude! Jim

One recent acquisition I had a hard time tracking down was Canada #1187, issued in 1990. This little 37-cent booklet stamp only values at $1.25 NH-VF and $1.00 used but took about two years of searching dealer cards and sales circuit books to find. I had no problem finding the complete booklet (Unitrade BK96) containing the stamp, but not a single for my alblum. At one point I bought a booklet, but couldn't bring myself to separate the stamp from it. And having the stamp in the booklet still didn't satisfy the space in my alblum. Eventually I found a dealer with a selection of copies though, I believe it was at the Fall 2012 show in Hamilton. Image borrowed from the Canadian Postal Archive.

No problem at all guys! I'm just happy to help fellow collectors in need. I have more dupes than I know what to do with so as long as I don't have to look hard for an item it's no trouble at all.

Westy Well you had me going on that one thinkng I probably did not have it but low and behold I found a used single. Surely don't recall having any trouble finding it so I must have just got lucky. Still $1.00 for a used stamp of recent issue is much more than most and usually indicates the value will probably rise.

Some of those Canadian parliament stamps can be tricky to find. They were issued in 50 cent booklets at a time when the letter rate was almost that much (37c, as in your example above). If you bought the booklet, you were only able to send a single letter and then you had a bunch of leftover make-up rate stamps (some of those are hard to find too). Canada Post finally gave up on the 50c booklets after the 39c and 40c letter rates. These stamps are also something you will almost never see in generic piles of stuff. Ryan

And some of the recent make-up rate stamps are also things you seldom come across. With such large jumps between domestic and US or International rates, you never need one of these small stamps to make up the difference, and they're too large to be used with old stamps that no longer meet the current rate - you would have to keep an old letter-rate stamp for years before you could ever use a 9c stamp to make it match the current letter rate. And if people do need make-up rate stamps, they think in terms of coins - 10c, 5c, 1c are much more logical stamps than 4c or 9c. All of these stamps below will be listed in catalogues at the minimum value because of their tiny face value, but that isn't an indicator of how common they are on mail, that's for sure. For the beneficial insect stamps, the 4c, 6c, 7c, 8c and 9c stamps are all things that get me excited if I come across them! Ryan

Ryan, those trades stamps are hard to find, especially used! I have dozens of the 1 and 2 cent values it seems, but some of the odd-ball denominations I am pretty sure I only have the one copy in my main collection. I didn't have much trouble with the beneficial insects, but I am pretty sure it's because I got them from the post office when they were issued.

I'll join in on this b**ch fest. My nemeses are the fractional denominations from the US Liberty series - coil - used. SC1054a 1056 and 1059. I've got them all mint but the used guys elude me. And I'll be darned if I'm going to buy a complete set just to complete my set.

I got around to checking my French collection, to see if I have that elusive 7 1/2 cent stamp. Sure enough, no 7 1/2 cent stamp in that set. But I also noticed, no precancels. I'm sure I had some precancels, so where are they? Found them in the "Back of Book" section, with the dues. And there I see I do have the 7 1/2 cent. Now I wonder, if it is only available with the precancel. `Paul

Hey, ILS. That would be brilliant. I know I can always rely on you! Hey there James! I'll tell you what. While I can't find the duplicates that I thought I had right off (I might still have them but currently unable to locate) HOWEVER, would this work in a pinch? They really don't fit in my collection and besides you have a collection dedicated to them and their history. I feel I'm obligated to put these where they will be much more appreciated. -Jeff

You know there is another that's been giving me issues finding used. A scott #497 Franklin, 10ยข Horiz. coil (perf 10 Vertically) and un-watermarked. If anyone has a used copy they wish to sell or trade please let me know. Thank you.

Surprising, considering he has multiples on his page of other stamps. It appears to be indeed not common in collections.

Considering he has most of the major items on page 1, you mean.

I sold another one of those 114's on Stamps2go last night for $5. Guess it is worth it for some to not have to look at that empty space any longer. I had most of my first several pages nealy complete before I found the first one.

For the longest time, I was missing one stamp out of the U.S. Transportation series, the 1988 10.1 cent Oil Wagon overprint stamp (Scott #2130a). It's not worth much, but nobody ever seemed to have it. Every online dealer I looked at, it was out of stock. I could never find it on Bidstart or Delcampe mint. I didn't spend a lot of time chasing it down and did eventually come across a nice copy, but it took literally years.
