I just wondered how others fill the holes in there albums/collections? I always like to get sets first if I can afford them. From there I usually try to get lower priced stamps so I get more stamps in the set. Then I might pick out 1 stamp that is higher priced. If I am not try to get a set then I try to get as many stamps as I can for the money I have to spend. I know doing it this way I will have a lot of high price holes in the end and not sure if this is the best way to go but I have a lot more stamps to look at.

I buy old albums and collections at auction. Occasionally I will buy a set or single I want badly (also at auction).

I typically buy individual stamps to fill holes in my albums and I have quite a few high-priced holes that may remain unfilled. That might not be the best approach but it is the most affordable one.

I have always insisted on buying complete sets. Finding individual stamps is just too hard. I do have a few incomplete sets. Invariably, I live to regret buying them that way.

I was kind of afraid of that happening also AirmailEd. I hope one day I can fill the holes and not live to regret not buying/getting the complete set all at once.
Bobby I would love to do your method but I never seem to win the auctions in my price range.

I managed to fill several holes in my collection by exchanging stamps on Colnect.com. It has an online catalogue where you can tick what you wish and also what you have available to exchange. This way you know exactly what you're getting so it can help you fill in gaps quite fast.

Hi
I usually try to buy complete sets. However, since my collection is specialized, I had to buy a few incomplete sets as the 2 or 3 high values were way out of my budget range. Regarding one set, I could have bought the high values fairly inexpensively when I was in Bogota, Colombia. I did not and have regretted it ever since. To finish a couple of sets, the material just doesn't show up that often.
Fortunately, I use blank quadrille pages exclusively and, therefore, never really have holes to fill. Occasionally I have to remount a page.

I collect with a few budget guidelines. When buying targeted stamps, I prefer to buy complete sets. But, when the complete set is above budget, I will resort to the lower values. When even the lower values are above budget, I will not buy anything from the set. Stamps above budget are simple 'out of scope' and I accept it as a given, that there are holes in my collection. I have been happily collecting that way for the past 25 years.

I'm with Jerry.I use quadrille pages having given up on picture type albums years ago,and ditto and double with the re-mounting as he mentioned. As a specialist in one area for over fifty years my missing numbers are almost gone at any rate.A couple missing would require a person without any budget.I hope to fill maybe one of them per year til I hit that wall.Down to five numbers that are maybe affordable if I get lucky at auctions. Two will never be my my collection that's just life. I would also echo bobby's method, collections at auction can yield a couple gems and excess can be sold to partly finance next purchase. I've found quite a few really nice stamps in old collections ,not always but enough that it is still worth a go.The last bunch I won had a $4000 block in it, price with shipping was less than $3.They are out there!

Holes in a collection - the bane of all stamp collectors I fear. I take the same approach as most of you have mentioned in buying sets and, when possible, year sets. Outside of that I tend to sort kiloware and hunt until I find what I'm looking for. Sometimes I find it and sometimes I don't. Like SWH stated... I accept it for what it is and add I use those blank spaces as motivation.
On that note if anyone has a US SC3000r - "Terry and the Pirates" from the Comic Strip Classics by all means hit me up!

Very nice find firstfrog. I haven't had that kind of luck yet but maybe one day I will. In the past few months I have been filling some holes 1 single stamp at a time. But haven't bought to much this summer been working to much. My husband asked me just the other day if I was going to get stamp number USA Scott 1 & 2 and I said I hope to one day. I know there are more expensive stamps then 1 & 2 but I just think you at least have to have number 1 to start off a USA collection.

I'm still filling some holes. I just finished with the 1923 Harding Memorial Issues. I was so proud of myself but then I went to scan it and on this Big computer screen of mine I see a tiny tear in the corner of number 611. I take it out of the mount and yes upon further examination I see the tiny tear. I so hate it when I look at something to buy it and don't see the imperfections. These poor eyes of mine. I wish I could scan everything and put it on my Big computer screen to look at it before I buy it. Oh well I guess I will need to find another 611.
