Perfs14: How did you get the perforations done? I've always thought that must be the most difficult part of the process.

I know someone that owns a perforating machine, and he will do ten or more sheets for a low charge. All he needs is a good jpg of the cindy you want and he'll print them (colour laser) and perforate the sheets, which is good since he lives in 'opal country' and not readily accessible. |

Cape of Good Hope Triangle LabelsI found this old thread and decided to give it a bump, as I think a small, recent project of mine can fit here. I just want to say that I hope what I have done will not end up being viewed as controversial or in poor taste. It is not intended for making money or for trying to fool anyone with fakes. It is just something to indulge one of my latest interests, and hopefully to promote the appreciation of what I think is a beautiful, iconic stamp design. As the COGH triangles are pricey to begin with, I cannot afford to buy too many of decent quality, and I hate to spend money on damaged or poor quality stamps. I have also decided that the genuine COGH triangles are really smaller than I wish they were, so hard to fully appreciate the design without magnification. As a result, I started playing around with enlarging images of the stamps, and I eventually ended up with this:  I will leave you to mull over what this looks like, and I will make another post later today to more fully describe what I have done here, as what started out as just playing around actually ended up with an investment of time into trying to do something that would look nice and that could be shared with others. Cape of Good Hope Triangle Labels (continued)As I was saying earlier, I wanted to be able to enjoy the COGH triangle design on a more frequent basis, and I wanted a larger image so that the nice detail would be more apparent. I learned pretty quickly that I needed really good quality images to get any kind of decent results, so I started looking on auction sites. I realized that the best looking stamps for the details were die and plate proofs, so I decided to use those. I also liked the idea of trying to avoid using the original colors and associated denominations of the genuine stamps, once again just to emphasize that I am not trying to fool anyone or create anything that might be construed as an attempt at a forgery. It seems that all four denominations had die proofs printed in black, and then there were also various color trials. Not all of the color trial printings have high-quality images on the internet, so I ended up using the 1-penny in black, 4-pence in blue-gray, 6-pence in yellow-orange, and 1-shilling in red, violet, and green. The black printing shows the details the best, followed by the violet, blue, and orange. For some reason, the red and green seemed to "bleed" quite a bit. The images look very clear on my computer, but when printed, they have the appearance of being over-inked and the design details become obscured. My next task will be to try lightening those two colors to see if that improves the printed quality. I will also write about how I have selected the paper for these in a later post. For purposes of illustration:  Left: COGH, Sc1 1p Brick Red on Bluish Paper, genuine, design measures 21mm high x 42mm across the base Center: COGH Label created from the image of a 1p black die/plate proof, design measures 26mm high x 52mm across the base Right: Maldive Islands modern era triangle stamp whose dimensions were used as a size guide for the COGH label

For 9 years, from 2011 to 2019, my friend Bernardí Moya from Artesa de Segre (Catalonia) printed by himself cinderellas to be sold at the friends going to the stamp collecting gathering that he organised. I like specially the one that he made for the August 2018 edition. They show Catalan presidents. They were printed by a domestic printer and perforated by his own means.
Covid has made impossible this year's edition of the gathering, due for next Sunday.

Cape of Good Hope Labels (continued)I promised that I would post something about the paper I used for these labels. The first ones I tried were just on standard-grade A4 size printer paper--nothing special. The printing turned out all right, but the paper seemed a bit flimsy, and I thought it might be nicer to do something of higher quality. After giving it some thought, I decided that re-purposing old album pages might be a good idea. I reasoned that the paper would be a bit heavier, of higher quality, and acid-free (in theory). I also have a ready stock of old album pages, which are the leftovers from box lot purchases after all the stamps have been removed. It seemed a shame just to put them in the recycle bin, so this seemed a nice solution. As a result, the sheet that you can see earlier in this thread is one that I printed on an old album page. The edges of the page are not in the best condition, but I was able to print the labels well clear of the edges. Moving forward, it will be my plan to put at least one label on the back of every piece of stamp-related correspondence that I send out. I started with the two packets that I sent to Rene ( renden ) and Tony ( tonyvella ). Much to my surprise and pleasure, the clerk at the Oxford Post Office agreed to hand cancel the labels while she was in the process of doing the stamps on the same envelopes. I had fully expected her to tell me that she couldn't do it, but was really pleased when she did. She even asked me where I wanted it cancelled, so I requested the lower right-hand corner. You're right, Michael. This is the 2018 issue. My memory, is not what it used to be. I'm getting old. Post edited. To compensate for my mistake, I'm uploading images of unapprouved trials given to me by Bernardí, without the Catalan flag and on transparent "vegetable paper" (or, so, we call it). I'm not sure which is the proper English name, I'm sorry.

cursus......Those are very nice. While I am here can I ask if there was an issue in 2019 ? I am not sure why I haven't thought about it before.....or maybe there was and my memory is also failing !!!  ( your memory is amazing by the way, the guided tour of Barcelona is proof of that !!).

They were made from old civil war posters. There are some books written on them. As most artists sided with the Republic, the quality of the items is very high.

Great post, Michael ( Londonbus1).... perhaps needless to say, but I love the design! Hmm, a mistake, eh? If it's to do with the design of the stamp, the only thing I can see is that the "R" in CINDERELLA looks much less like an R than in the other places where it also occurs, such as FORUM or WE'RE or YEAR. If the mistake is something in the selvedge notes, then I am not sure. |

Thanks again to LB1 ( Londonbus1 ) for posting this great COGH triangle style souvenir sheet and to daniel for sending me one, which has now arrived. I am delighted to have this item as part of my collection now. Thank you very much, Daniel! And because now I have the real thing in hand, I can see the "error" as such: in one of the stamps, which is upside down in the posted image, Hope's head is turned in the other direction! What a thing! I wouldn't have ever thought of something like that, but it's a clever change to incorporate into the souvenir sheet. It is much more as Daniel put it "a deliberate difference." Regardless, I think it is cool! First glass of wine is now poured for today as I am settling down to enjoy the evening. Stay stampy, all! |
