I purchased a good sized India & States collection over the Xmas period - for only US$50 Plenty in there to sort thru' - I haven't looked too deeply into India previously but found myself buying this collection after being seduced by Tony MacGillicuddys ' Uglies' thread on that other board. Anyway, long story short, I am working my way thru' the Indian States items and am working on 'Chamba' State. In the small lot from there is a curio that I would like more info about if possible. This 1/2d Green KEVII - SG30 - has a small 'h' in the word CHAMBA. It looks like one of the uprights hasn't printed ! (3rd stamp in below image - the first 2 are normal O/P on SG41). My question is this : Is this a constant error or is it just a curio - that is, is it a 'one off' transient flaw ? Any replies from those that know appreciated :-) Dave

However, in the preamble for Indian Convention States under 'Stamps of India Overprinted' it states that 'In the Queen Victoria issues we omit varieties due to broken type...', this is likely to have been carried over to Edward VII issues and is probably what you have. That's not to say that your stamp doesn't have some additional value.

Thanks Daniel
I like that possible scenario, of 'broken type' ...
It feels right that that is what this is so will accept that and move on.
Many thanks
Dave

Dave, DK, I've just noticed that the A in STATE is smaller than the other letters in your SG30. I quoted the SG comments on damaged type for the Queen Victoria issues, the sentence continues with 'including the numerous small "A" varieties which may have come about through damaged type." Presumably, the A was replaced at some point. This would seem to confirm my theory that the issues with the Queen Victoria type also apply to the Edward VII stamps. Also, your stamp has two elements of damaged type, making it even more interesting. Daniel

Thanks Daniel
I have just seen this reply from you so apologies for that.
Yes, a small 'A' as well. Not being familiar with Indian States I am not sure exactly what to look for that may be out of character for these. But two elements of faulty 'type' does make it 'more interesting' as you quite rightly state :-)
Thanks for the feedback
Dave
