It's been a while since I purchased anything new for my collection(s). The issue being about three years ago I went on a feeding frenzy of buying kiloware and in short order I had - if I recall correctly - 27 pounds of material to sort through. I'm down to 16 pounds unsorted at present. I'd put everything in gallon size zip-loc bags at about a pound each. About half worldwide and the other half United States. I've been sorting ever since - mostly the US stuff though I've managed to get through a few pounds of the worldwide as well. This is one of 5 boxes like this I bought. There are but two or so pounds of US left to sort. Now when I say "sort" I really mean first sort as I've sorted them so far by denomination and type (based primarily on thematic collections). Tonight I'll dig into the second to last pound of US and from there start second sorting - first the topical stuff and then everything else. I'm excited to get the first sorting done and begin filling spaces in my collections. Just last evening I browsed through my US albums and most of the few spaces I have post-1940 I found myself thinking, "I've got that.... I've got those" so before too very long I should have but a few blank spaces in my US collection for the years 1923-2000. I know this - once all of this is sorted through and everything is in it's place I'll not tackle kiloware more than a pound at a time. From all of the sorting, however, I've come across a lot of stock material for a goodly number of topical collections (I use the free album pages from APS and sometimes I simply print their pages and sometimes I use the APS pages as a source to create my own pages using Microsoft Publisher). Below are a pair of random pages from my US Nondenominated Postage (1975-2007) collection where I used MS-Publisher to create my own pages based off the APS free pages on the same thematic subject. These scans are from the New Mexico themed pages from APS where I simply printed and used the pages as provided. I tend to print the title page in color and the rest of the pages on any given theme in grayscale. The kiloware - as might be expected - contains a lot of duplication, seconds and general wallpaper but that's not to say there haven't been a few nice finds along the way. The scan below is three stamps from a sheet of 100 of the US sc#1610 with an offset printing error. I can find these in MNH condition on EBay but I've yet to see any of them in used condition. Not saying they're not out there I just haven't seen them. As for catalog value I can't say but I've seen singles of these things listed for as high as $75 for a single MNH... for what it's worth. So as I continue to sort and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on the first sort through all that's US I'm excited to see what spaces get filled, what topical collections will blossom from out of nowhere and what remains to be seen that I haven't thought of as yet. Then it's onto sorting the WW kiloware. This past weekend I did finally break down and place a US 2000 year set of MNH into my Liberty Album and thus catching up to as far as the album(s) go year wise. Currently keeping my eye on a 2001 and 2002 year set to keep moving forward. I'm really pleased with my US collection I must say and look forward to getting back to a place where I take one step forward in my collection and then a step backward to fill out the classic areas of the collection. Sometimes I have to remind myself that stamp collecting is a marathon not a sprint. That's where I'm currently at with my collections - where are you with yours?

Oooh, I like that shifted print error multiple! Things like that aren't very common, it takes a lot of kiloware to find a goodie like that one. I'm a tagging hunter and I find a fair number of tagging errors in my kiloware, they don't stand out too obviously so they're more likely to remain in the batch without getting picked out by the seller.
I wish I was down to only a few pounds of kiloware left to sort. I spent many years buying endless piles of stuff (and now have multiple 100s of Kg yet to deal with) because I have found I have more fun digging through cheap stamps than anything else - tagging errors, plate varieties, printing and perforation varieties, I have a great time looking for such things. I have a "proper" collection of Canadian stamps that will be worth while to sell at some point, but I spend far more time and have much more fun with the "piles of stuff" collection. I've been busy with other stuff lately so the stamps have kind of suffered in comparison. I'll have to fill up the sink and get soaking again soon, maybe that will light a spark again. (I do have a few hundred stamps set aside that I plan to scan to add to various topical threads here, maybe I should do that first ....)

I've almost finished processing 3 pounds of U.S. off paper...all that remains are several ziplock bags of Washington-Franklins and a few odds and ends. If I would have had to soak them off-paper, I would probably still have 3 pounds to process.

Ron that's very impressive progress you've made.My own collection is stalemated at the missing numbers,I've stayed busy adding to revenues and cinderillas. I've also been trying to branch my used block pursuit to the provinces issues and acquire used stamps to go with the mint I own.I continue to accumulate numerous copies of various issues to start studies on some of them.My large queen holdings have continued to multiply and I've found some watermarks in my purchases.I look forward to winter to spend time with my Billig's volume 22 and look through my extensive stock for varieties listed in there.Stamping seems to be an ever evolving hobby.

UPDATE: I picked up a few things from EBay last evening. I had 4 of 6 volumes of Westport albums telling the story of the American Revolution on covers. Really quite interesting in that the covers are franked nicely for the event being commemorated and additionally postmarked exactly 200 years later to the day from the city/town/country where the event occurred. Now I have the complete set and couldn't be happier about it... I'd looked for those things for several years as lone albums - wasn't going to double purchase an album to get one I didn't yet have. I also picked up a cover for my topical collection of Non-Denominated US Postage 1975-2007. Baby steps... but steps all the same.
Will post pics once they arrive.

UPDATE: The final volume of US Bicentennial covers needed to complete the set of six volumes ain't gonna happen. It seems the seller posted something that had already been posted and sold by accident. Things happen - I was refunded the full amount and given a $25 EBay store credit. That said I'm still searching for the last volume. *sigh* I finished a first sort of US kiloware and have begun second sorting. Most of what I'm second sorting is for topical collections and filling spaces so far as a few pre-2000 definitive issues are concerned and setting aside post-2000 definitives and used singles from sets. I don't yet have album pages US post-2000.
Also yesterday evening I spent some time going through piles of covers segregating pieces that would work well in some topical collections. I'm not a cover collector per se yet have somewhere in the neighborhood of 800-1000 of them which I mostly consider either trade or topical material.
Next up is a more thorough sort of US Christmas stamps. Those things are all over the place and like many collectors I view them mostly as wallpaper, however, I also think every stamp is collectible - maybe not one of my collections but collectible all the same. I'll use the Christmas stamps - and Love stamps too - to create a few topical collections just to use them in some sort of meaningful way.
All in all I've been making good progress the last month or so with material I'd let languish in cardboard boxes tucked away in the dark corner of a closet. A huge thank you to the APS for their free topical pages - I don't always use the pages themselves but they are a very good source for Scott numbers of US stamps on a particular theme - I particularly like the topical pages on states.

.... It seems the seller posted something that had already been posted and sold by accident... That happened to me with an Iwo Jima stamp FDC -- it happened to be a cachet that I hadn't seen in 3 years of searching so I was quite disappointed when the seller gave me the news. Which of the Westport albums are you still missing?

Good morning, fellow collectors! At last a day off from work! I've worked 19 of the last 21 days and looking like I'll work the next 12 straight but I NEVER turn down overtime so this is a boondoggle for me. Besides, the extra income will go a long ways to getting my Christmas shopping done and adding a few things to ye olde stamp collection. My latest acquisition was an old album of US for my US Bicentennial topical collection. You can see it here. Along the way I picked up a few First Flight covers to be added to my US topical collections of "Louisiana" and "Texas". I'd also been closely watching a really nice collection of over 500 pieces on Franklin D. Roosevelt. I'd had a max I would pay for it in mind and once outbid I abandoned the auction. Sure is a nice collection someone got though and congrats to the winning bidder. I did, however, have a back up plan... failing winning the FDR topical collection led to me doing something I'd been pushing to the back burner for far too long - I finally purchased to Scott Liberty US Album Part B (1995-2006) so as to extend my US collection beyond 2000. I'd hesitated because somewhere along the way Scott changed the format of their albums from 1847-2000 to 1847-1994, 1995-2006 and 2007-2015. I don't like the idea of having two sets of pages from 1995-2000 but it is what it is and I finally bit the bullet on the album and purchased. My kiloware at a glance tells me I have most all definitives for 2001-2006 and a goodly number of commems. I'd long ago bought a second binder and spread my US collection across two Liberty binders (I make a number of my own pages to go along with the pre-printed pages so the volume of the album almost doubled). Now the US collection extends into a third volume and eventually a fourth. Again it is what it is.
The word of the day is and remains "sorting". I've got the bulk of my US kiloware first sorted - currently going through that kiloware and second sorting - I should be able to start to identify stamps from there and add them to my US national collection and from there my myriad of US topical collections. That's what's being sorted on the dining table. In the spare bedroom I'm sorting more pounds and pounds of WW kiloware. It's an ongoing process. LOL

Tomorrow marks two weeks since I finally broke down and set up a dedicated "stamping" area in my humble abode. Nice, new folding table to work at, a pair of lights to keep the area well illuminated, a new bookcase to house binders and what not. I was quite pleased with my creation.
Sunday marks two weeks since my girlfriend's place flooded and the room previously dedicated to stamping, meditation, quiet reading area and bicycle park became a storage locker.
The recent flooding in the area has kept me busy with after work work helping friends and family pull up flooring, cut out sheetrock, pulling cabinets, debris pickup and the like. Most everyone is now gutted as far as they need to be gutted and the rebuilding about to begin. Most everyone I helped is thankfully flood insured and waiting on adjusters and work crews at this point.
I'm making a day off for myself come Sunday - I really need to do some housecleaning, laundry, etc. but mostly get a grip on that "storage locker" bedroom and carve out a small area again for stamping.
In the meantime I've picked up a newer (2013)US/BNA along with US 2001 and 2002 year sets. The 2001 commemoratives only as I have most of the souvenir sheets and 2002 as a more complete set. I'd held tight collecting US only up through 2000 for a number of years but am now moving forward again and will complete through 2006 over time and then access from there if I wish to move forward with the next set of supplements (2007-2015). Also added a few covers mostly for topical collections.
So... that's where my stamp world is right now - really looking forward to getting my stamping area back!

Got home from work yesterday and my US/BNA had arrived. This is only the third one I've bought since I started collecting - happy, happy with even the small things. Even better - my girlfriend is in the spare room this morning better organizing her things and deciding what to drag over to her storage locker. My persistent whining, "If I could just get a small area around my stamp collection cleared out..." may be paying off.

2002 U.S. Year Set arrived via USPS in my mailbox on yesterday. A bit of a bummer it arrived already on pages but with the bonus of already having mounts cut to size! I use mounts on my US, Liechtenstein and US Bicentennial collections - everything else is hinged. All that really accomplishes is it delays having to buy more mounts! So now... I collect United States 1847- 2000 - 2001 -2002. The 2001 & 2002 year sets I'll mount when I feel like it. As for now my work on my US collection is building pages for things like a few plate blocks, coil pairs, covers, etc. on quadrille pages to mix into the US General Collection. i127.photobucket.com/albums/p133/clutch70706/04_zpssww3jzva.jpg

Nothing special or overly impressive but I liked it all the same. This piece will be added to my topical collection of "Louisiana" and will look quite nice with a few First Air Mail Flight covers out of the same airport. Also recently picked up commemorative year sets with most souvenir sheets for 2004 & 2005 and eagerly awaiting their arriving via USPS. Once I get '04 and '05 in my hands I'll start looking at the 2006 year set. From there I'll be up to date on the pre-printed Harris pages I currently have. Likely the rest of the year my collecting resources will go to what I call "back filling" from 2006. This all works into what I've done for a long time now - I acquire commemorative and souvenir sheets MNH and search, trade, beg, borrow or plead to find used singles of all definitives and souvenir sheet singles. I admit to basically collecting what Harris printed on their pages then using speedrille pages to toss in things like booklets, the occasional cover, line pairs, etc.

As mentioned earlier I'd stopped my US collection at year 2000 until recently when I purchased a third HE Harris Liberty binder and what is now called "Part B" pre-printed pages for aforementioned binder. I've acquired the last commemorative year set for the period 2001-2006 and from here it's time to mount the year sets and search stock for the necessary definitives and used souvenir sheet singles. As soon as these philatelic delights arrive I'm facing something I haven't done in a LONG time... I have literally hundreds of stamps to mount onto album pages, scores more to dig out of stock and ID by perf, color, year, microprinting, etc. As collector that's my happy time, my good place. My girlfriend is still staying with me while repairs continue on her residence as a result of last month's flood which means my spare bedroom where my collection resides still remains for all intents and purposes a storage locker. She's 2 to 4 weeks out from being able to move back into her place which also means it'll be that long before I get my stamping area back. When that day finally comes I'm going to be in great shape to enjoy what I consider the best part of this hobby of ours - filling spaces - hundreds and hundreds of them!

With the acquisition of a 2006 US Year Set it means I can start to look backward rather than just forward when it comes to filling spaces and to that end I also picked up these jewels. US Sc#756-765 in horizontal line pairs to go along with the vertical line pairs already in my album. These won't per se fill spaces as they'll mount to a quadrille pages to match the vertical pairs. Also snatched up this pair of beauties - US Sc #750a and #751a... these are true space fillers. You can never have too much money, you can never have too much RAM and you can never have too many Farleys!

A few recent arrivals in my mailbox on their way to my collection: US Sc #1 US Sc#471 When seeking used singles of contemporary souvenir sheet issues I've found more often than not I can find the used sheet intact for less than a set of the singles. That was the case with this Endangered Species sheet. Just wasn't EVER coming across these things in mixtures or kiloware so decided on this approach. Turns out I got three for one which is good - I'd probably not have separated the one with the San Diego Zoo cancel. I think I'll just keep that one, break up the one with the red cancel and use the third as trade bait in the end.

Over the weekend I mounted some material I recently acquired by way of purchase, trades, sorting and giveaways. The US Sc #1 and #471, 2001 & 2002 year sets and few random spaces filled throughout the collection. Always nice filling spaces - my favorite part of the hobby - it's almost like a reward of some kind! Sunday evening while binge watching "Joe Kenda: Homicide Hunter" I scanned every page of the first of three volumes of my US collection. You can see that collection here. I won't be stamping much during the evenings this week. By the time I get home I have 45-60 minutes of decent daylight left and I'm using that time to replace rear brake pads, rotors and calipers on an '02 Chevy Silverado. Not a daunting task but time consuming - I'm no mechanic but it's within my scope of knowledge I'm just not fast at it! Here's how that #1 looks in place: That #11 doesn't look nearly so lonely any more.

Good grief! Your team is kind of dominant, huh? Whew... that's impressive. As for the scanning it should be noted I've scanned the United States... in the grand scheme of things my progress scanning is modest at best but it's the US I was most interested in getting scanned.

The one thing that's had my attention most over the past week or more has been pages - what to do about pages. I have a number of topical collections that are basically segregated by theme into large glassines or envelopes and I'd really like them on pages at some point.
The big question for me is, a) create pages for each thematic collection or, b) blank pages and mount material on the fly.
I have a lot of material that's sorted and ready to be mounted and once my chores are done this weekend I'm hoping to get some of that taken care of while watching some football. First, however, I have to change rear brake pads, rotors and calipers on my work truck. Not a difficult task but not how I wanted to spend my Saturday morning either.

A few days ago I'd had my eye on almost a dozen stamps with auctions ending within an hour of each other. After all was said and done I chose not to bid on about half of them, was outbid on three others but picked up two US Classic Era issues in the end. This US Sc #25 Acquired at 6.0% of 2016 Scott CV US Sc #71 Acquired at 13.29% of 2016 Scott CV The pair acquired for a total of 9.79% of 2016 Scott CV I don't know about y'all but I've - for the most part - learned a little bidding discipline. Under no circumstances whatsoever do I bid more than 30% of catalog value. At thirty-percent CV it's got to be something I really want and want badly. More often than not I cap out a bid at 15% of CV... and that includes postage/shipping. I include postage/shipping in my tally because, hey, that's what's coming out of my pocket. I don't put a whole lot of stock in catalog value but then again I do in that the CV gives me a guide to what stamps I can and cannot consider for my collection. Yeah, the #25 is a wee bit dicey but all things being equal I walked off with two nice additions to my collection for less than ten percent catalog. Even an old tight a** like myself can be happy about that.
