October 27This cover (one of many sent me by Beryllium Guy ) was postmarked aboard the USS America (CVA-66) on this date in 1971 while she was operating in the Mediterranean Sea with the U.S. 6th Fleet. The ship was the third Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier and the third Navy ship to bear the name "America." The 8 cent, black, blue, yellow & red, perf. 11 stamp on the naval cover depicts the Earth, Sun and Apollo 15 lunar module on the surface of the Moon (Scott 1434; Aug 2, 1971), one of two stamps from the Space Achievement Decade issue. Apollo 15, the fourth mission to land men on the Moon, was conducted from July 26 to August 7, 1971.

Now that I have seen these amazing images, I think I will pay more attention to post marks. I do collect mainly mint but now my interest is peaked.
i do collect used Canada and covers with postmarks from certain areas of my home province of Nova Scotia.
Now I have a new interest to persue thanks to joining this forum. Will have to revise my budget.

Picture postcard mailed from Smichov / Smichow, a district of Prague (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) to Odessa, Russia (20/10 receiver, as per the old calendar). Franked at 5h (Scott 113). Assessed postage-due of 4 kopecks with the blue oval mark of Odessa. An additional circular "Control" handstamp of Odessa is probably related to the redirecting of the card to Kiev.

I missed another couple of days when I had date matches - drat & blast. Oh well, I'll make up for it with a full slate of 4 stamps for today. The first of my Greenland stamps is one we saw a few weeks ago when I was commenting on the damage this cancellation device had seen. In spite of the poor readability of the cancellation I like this stamp very much. First, polar bear + cubs = yay! Second, this is from a very small town on the east coast and I'm always pleased to see cancellations from the really small settlements. The October 30 postmark reads "Tiniteqilaq" and is written according to the dominant West Greenlandic dialect but the town is now known by its East Greenlandic name of Tiilerilaaq. Last year I read an article on the NPR's oddly-named blog "Goats and Soda" about the terrible suicide problem in Greenland and the town of Tiilerilaaq was featured. More recently, Greenland's official tourism website had an article about a community revival project underway in Tiilerilaaq. The article contains a number of photos of the remarkable austere landscape there. Up next is a more recent stamp from Greenland's art series of stamps. Aage Gitz-Johansen was a Danish artist who spent a lot of time in Greenland and much of his work deals with Greenlandic themes. This panting shows a drum dancer. The stamp bears an October 30, 2001 cancellation applied in Tasiilaq, the home of Greenland's philatelic centre and the only major town on the east coast. I have two stamps from Burma (now known as Myanmar) which show the same postmark date, October 30. They are clearly made with different cancellation devices, however - on the second stamp shown here, we can also see a year date of 1956. The two stamps show different denominations with the same design. The Mingun Bell was at various times the largest bell in the world, weighing in at 55,555 viss (a Burmese measurement of mass, equivalent to 199,999 pounds or a bit under 91 metric tonnes. Ryan

31st October (1898) Great Britain, half-penny Queen Victoria 50th Jubilee issue, Scott #111 (SG #197), 1/2-penny vermilion, postmarked on this date in 1898 in London. Well, I looked for something for this date which had anything to do with Hallowe'en, to wrap up the theme that I tried to start earlier this month, and the best I could come up with is a somewhat orange-looking image of Queen Victoria.

Since I missed a couple of days it turns out I also missed a couple of copies of this "Daily Life in Thule" collage artwork stamp. So, everybody's going to have to wait until next year to collect the full set of sloppy bilingual handstamp cancellations from Jakobshavn / Ilulissat. This one reads October 31, 1986. A couple of matches from my small glassines today. I don't have many from Bahrain that I can show and one of those was missed on the 27th - again, more to show next year, I guess. This stamp commemorates the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Arab Postal Union and shows an October 31, 1977 postmark. Bahrain gained independence in 1971 and joined the Universal Postal Union in 1973, but according to the history written on the Bahrain Post website, they didn't become a member of the Arab Postal Union until 1986. The flags of Qatar and Bahrain look very similar, so I'm guessing that it's the Qatari flag I'm seeing in the ring of flags on this stamp. Bahrain's flag is red & white, whereas Qatar's colour is more of a claret or maroon shade of red. The white patch is also a bit longer on Bahrain's flag. Bahrain's flag and its proportions: And finally, we go back to British Guiana (now Guyana) for another look at the stamp showing alluvial gold mining. This October 31, 1945 postmark (upside-down, as seems to be usual on BG stamps) was applied at the General Post Office in the capital city of Georgetown. Ryan

4 kopecks Romanov Tercentenary postal stationery card, cancelled on the (un-numbered) railway traveling post-office Riga-Tukhum and addressed to Munchen. While TPO's were usually designated with a pair of numbers (one for each terminal of the line), the postmarks of some smaller lines simply gave the names of the termini. The "135" in circle is some kind of postal control mark - of Russian provenance?

I have just a single match for the day, but at least it's a stamp design we haven't seen yet on this thread. This 1975 issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of Greenland's telecommunications industry which started with 4 radio stations in 1925. TELE Greenland was still run from Denmark at the time of this stamp's issuance - Home Rule came to Greenland in 1979 and they took over telecommunications in 1987, with the offices moving to Greenland in 1989-1990. As of 1998, all communications in and out of Greenland have been the responsibility of TELE Greenland. The stamp shows a falcon and a radar dish, and the postmark is dated November 1. Ryan

November 2, 1976 is the date seen on this second-generation machine cancel from Julianehåb / K'ak'ortok', now known as Qaqortoq. I really need to find a printed copy of some Greenlandic postmark literature - if the year date slug was correct this would be an early date for such a cancellation, as according to the incomplete online Hjørne postmark catalogue, the capital city of Godthåb / Nuuk didn't begin use of this style until September 1, 1978 (the same date as other towns which moved to machine cancels such as Egedesminde / Aasiaat and Dundas / Pituffik). The stamp design shows a longboat. New South Wales is the host for our other stamp today. This November 2, 1901 postmark from Sydney is on a stamp which shows an early version of the New South Wales coat of arms. Ryan

Inflation-period cover from Tambov to Kirsanov (6/11). Franked at the 20 rubles rate (valid from November 1st to December 1st) with two 10k Imperial Arms, revalued at this point in the inflationary period to rubles. The large double-ring handstamp on the back is the seal of an organization (indistinct).

3rd November (1970) Sierra Leone, Scott #C101: 9-1/2-cent multi-colored airmail, Scott #385: 4-1/2-cent multi-colored regular postage, and Scott #389, 3-1/2-cent multicolored regular postage. The first two stamps were issued to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts in Sierra Leone, and the third stamp was issued to commemorate Sierra Leone's participation in the Expo '70 International Exhibition which was held in Osaka, Japan from March-September that year. The cover is postmarked on this date in 1970 in Freetown, which is the capital and largest city in Sierra Leone. It was mailed to a manager at Barclay's Bank in Reading, England, and I received it as part of an accumulation of stamps and covers which had been gathered over a couple of decades by an employee at the bank.

Inflation-period cover from Moscow, Bryansk Railway station (oval cds, K&R 757.x, serial “Б”) to Libava / Libau, Latvia. Registered with black-bordered “R” label of “Moscou-gare ch. de f. M.-K.-W.” and franked at 90R: 18 copies of 5k perf Imperial Arms, revalued at this time 100X to rubles. This rate should have ended on October 18th, replaced by a 150R rate and on 3/11 by a 300R rate. Have some stamps been removed from the cover?

November 4 brings me two matches from my Greenland collection. First, this 1985 issue which commemorated the 50th anniversary of Queen Mother Ingrid's entry into the Danish royal family upon her marriage to the future King Frederick IX. She came from the Swedish royal family as her father was King Gustaf VI Adolf. The stamp shows a marguerite (a type of chrysanthemum) specific to the gardens at the former Danish royal castle of Sofiero in Helsingborg. The November 4, 1985 postmark is from Christianshåb, now known as Qasigiannguit. Very few Greenlandic towns exist with a single spelling of their town name. Apart from the change from Danish colonial names to indigenous names, there have also been a couple rounds of orthographic reform. By my count, only 4 currently existing towns and settlements have used a single name over their philatelic history. Here's one of them, Upernavik. The stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Commission for Scientific Investigations in Greenland and shows a meteorite and its microscopic iron crystal structure. The postmark date is November 4, 1978. Ryan

I missed yesterday's matches AGAIN - drat, blast, bother, and blast one more time. Nov. 5 had 5 matches for me from Greenland, so they'll be shown over the next 3 years, assuming I don't miss the boat again in future years. For today, I can show a stamp we haven't seen yet. This one commemorates Henrik Lund, a Greenlandic artist and pastor who also wrote the lyrics to Greenland's national anthem. I've posted a copy of the national anthem here before when we saw the stamp commemorating Jonathan Petersen, the composer of its music, but I might as well post it again and the musically inclined among you may sing along with the notes seen on the stamp design. The postmark is dated November 6, 1986 and comes from Narsaq, coincidentally the town where Lund eventually served as pastor. Next is a very common Greenlandic stamp, the original lowest value in the first series of definitive stamps to show Queen Margrethe II, issued in 1973. 5 years later, an even smaller face value of 5 øre was issued. The November 6 cancellation gives the magnifying loupe a bit of a workout, and the town in which it was used was Julianehåb / K'ak'ortok', now known as Qaqortoq. I also have a pair of matches from my small glassines to show. Both of them bear Queen Victoria's likeness, or her once-upon-a-time likeness at least. First, a November 6, 1912 postmark on a stamp from the Australian state of Queensland. And finally, a stamp used on November 6, 1907 in Port Augusta, South Australia. I need to upgrade my scanner - for some mysterious reason, it handles both blue and red fairly well but somehow really misses when they're mixed together to create purple inks. Ryan

We were in Narsaq yesterday and we're there again today, although this time we're seeing the older orthography that gave the spelling as "Narssaq". The November 7, 1984 postmark is seen on a high face-value 25 krone stamp featuring the codfish. Up next is another copy of the stamp showing the Daily Life in Thule collage by Greenlandic artist Aninaaq. This time the bilingual Jakobshavn / Ilulissat handstamp is quite legible, perhaps the best copy that I have among all the messy ones. This November 7 postmark comes from 1986. From my small glassines I can show another black swan from Western Australia. This time the postmark is from the small mining town of Leonora, dated November 7. Wikipedia says the average January high temperature in Leonora is 37°C / 99°F. That's too hot for me! Yeesh. And finally, another workout for my linen tester to determine that this is in fact a November 7, 1941 postmark from Metz on this President Hindenburg stamp overprinted for use in the annexed territory of Lorraine. That's Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg to you. Ryan

This copy of the stamp issued showing the M/S Kununguak and a pilot boat looks like it was cancelled on November 8, 1976 in Julianehåb (now known by its Greenlandic name of Qaqortoq) but they're fooling you! This is actually from a postal substation from one of the tiny towns in the region - I wish I had the full postmark here, as these small towns are sometimes tough to find on cancellations. These towns aren't large enough to complete all the duties required of a proper post office. Qaqortoq was a hub for such substations with 11 of them in service at various times ("allegiance" to the main post office sometimes changed and the little town's substation then served a different main post office). Included below is an example of the postmark from one of these substations. Burma's (or rather, Myanmar's) gigantic Mingun Bell is back today on this stamp with a November 8, 1960 cancellation from Kyaikto, a city of about 35,000. The Wikipedia article for Kyaikto is very limited so you can have a look at this page on Bret Wallach's Great Mirror website for a look at the region. Ryan
