Karen Blixen was an author best known for the novel Out of Africa which was made into a movie .
Frederiksværk is a town of about 12,000 which had a cannon foundry. My previous postmark entry had an æ which got converted to ä by wikipedia, but this æ is a keeper. (Very nice to be able to find the character map on the computer.)

I'm finding it really fascinating looking through some of these postmarks, looking at where the stamps have been and when. Hopefully I'll be able to get some of mine sorted out soon and get showing them off.

Vasia, I just took a quick look, and noticed that Scott #460 was not issued until 1958, so the postmark is most likely from 1967. Just FYI.

Cover from Barvenkovo, Kharkov through Petrograd (22/12) to Shlissel'burg Prison (arrival cds of Christmas day). Blue oval censormark: "Shlissel'burg / Examined / Hard Lab.Prison". Two additional manuscript censor markings on the front of the cover: a) a "Pro" = "Prosmotryeno" = "Examined" and b) a "Ne propushchi" = "Do not let it through". So the czar's political prisoner probably did not receive his correspondence.

On this date last year, I got an envelope that went through the Albany post office in the afternoon. Not the most exciting postmark ever, but it has a festive slogan.

20th December (1938) Canada, Scott #241, 10-cent dark carmine commemorative depicting the Memorial Chamber in the Canadian Parliament Building in Ottawa, postmarked in Vancouver, British Columbia on this date in 1938. This stamp is the lowest value in a set of five pictorial images. I acquired this stamp from firstfrog2013 as part of the TSF Donation Auction lot earlier this year. Thanks, Frog!

21st December (1917) U.S., Scott #498 (probably--need to check perf size to confirm), 1-cent green definitive depicting George Washington, postmarked on this date in Tacoma, Washington in 1917, exactly 100 years ago today. Checking on the "Lewis Branch" noted in the postmark, I was able to find references to a Fort Lewis in the Tacoma area, but a brief search did not reveal more. The business side of this postcard bears a Christmas greeting, but the other side shows a portrait of then-U.S. President Woodrow Wilson with the U.S. flag and a pro-Wilson patriotic slogan, presumably regarding his stance on U.S. involvement in World War I, which was ongoing at that time. It should also be noted that the picture shows the 48-star U.S. flag behind Wilson, as this card was printed after Arizona, the 48th state, was admitted to the union in 1912, but long before Alaska (49th) and Hawaii (50th) were admitted as states in 1959.

Germany inflation-period 2 milliarden (Scott 295). Any help in deciphering the postmark would be appreciated!
I'm very late to the party here but I'd like to take a wild stab at this. How about Sangerhausen? Sangerhausen is famous for its rosarium and that could be the word found in the bottom half of the postmark. Since it's unlikely that the same word would feature twice on the postmark, the word under the town name could be "Rosenstadt" or "city of roses" ( Mick will scream "hey, that's Portland's nickname!"). On a quick search I can't find any examples that match to prove my idea but here are a couple other Werbestempeln that link Sangerhausen with roses. Ryan

22nd March (1948) Canada, Scott #C9 Airmail depicting Canadian Geese in Flight, postmark city illegible. This example also came from First Frog's TSF Donation Auction ( firstfrog2013 ) lot. And I'm super double extra late to the party on this one. It looks like you have a Railway Post Office (RPO) cancel on this one, cancelled on the Halifax, Bridgewater & Yarmouth railway. The postmark reads HX. BR. & YAR. on the top and R.P.O. on the bottom. That's a fun combination, an RPO cancel on an airmail stamp! The BNAPS RPO Study Group Newsletter from Nov-Dec 2009 has full details on the RPO cancels from this railway. Ryan

On this date in 1981, the San Rafael post office reminded us to support our lung association by using Christmas seals. I did intend to do that this year, but... forgot. Perhaps I will remember to get Easter seals.

An Austrian airmail cover from Vienna to Flint, Michigan. The stamp, a #632 showing a Vickers-Viscount airplane, is NOT an airmail stamp, though it commemorated the re-opening of "Austrian Airlines" and was meant to be used primarily on airmail letters. PS: Scott doesn't list any airmail stamps for Austria between 1953 and 1968. PSS: Does anyone know what the little purple flower signifies??

22nd December (1916) U.S., Scott #405 (probably--need to check perf size to confirm), 1-cent green definitive stamp depicting George Washington and postmarked on this date in 1916 in San Francisco, California. The postmark is one I have not seen before, advertising the Panama-California International Exposition held in San Diego that year, rather than the Panama-Pacific Exposition which was held in San Francisco in 1915. From Wikipedia: "The Panama–California Exposition was an exposition held in San Diego, California, between 1st January 1915, and 1st January 1917. The exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, and was meant to tout San Diego as the first U.S. port of call for ships traveling north after passing westward through the canal. The fair was held in San Diego's large urban Balboa Park."
