I had been waiting to add the above image of an Ohio Malt Beverage Tax stamp that is dated 12-23-43 upside down of course. It is from the Schoenling Brewing Company. This is just one of many Ohio Tax stamps that have perfin dates on them. Have a Great Christmas Mike Clevenger

23rd December (1919) For those of you who missed it on the U.S. Christmas Seal thread, I offer my personal favorite example from my holdings of a seal tied to a Christmas greeting postcard postmarked on this date in 1919 in San Francisco, California. The stamp is probably U.S., Scott #498 1-cent green definitive depicting George Washington (perf size needs to be checked to confirm this).

Time to show a few items from my Christkindl collection. Catholics in Austria have turned a small village named Christkindl into a veritable Christmas-time postal industry. Copy/pasting off the internet: "An epileptic local bandmaster's miraculous recovery led to construction of 1725's echt-Barock, richly gilded Christkindl Pilgrimage Church, 3 km/1.86 mi southwest of the Steyr Innenstadt. Gaze high upward toward the dome fresco, a vision of the Assumption painted by Johann Carl von Reslfeld. Visitors come from far beyond for seasonal viewings of the parsonage's enormous Pöttmesser nativity scene (778 figures!) and a Biblical diorama populated by 300 linden-carved creatures, made mechanically moveable by Karl Klauda's intricate system of bicycle chains, gears, and shafts. Deluged by mail during each year's Advent season, the village's tiny post office nevertheless manages to Christkindl-postmark more than two million cards and letters." A typical philatelic favor type: (Click on image to magnify if you want to read the print) Here is second type cancelled near Advent as a first day cover, then also on Xmas eve and Epiphany. The postally used ones are normally cancelled earlier in December.

25th December (1945) France, Scott #513, 1.50-franc rose definitive stamp depicting "Marianne" postmarked in Clamecy in the Burgundy region on this date in 1945. I acquired this stamp from bobby1948 as a part of a "consolation" lot in the "Something Different" giveaway. Thanks, Bobby! From Wikipedia: "Clamecy is a community in the Nièvre department in central France, located at the confluence of the Yonne and Beuvron and on the Canal du Nivernais, 74 km (46 mi) N.N.E. of Nevers on the Paris–Lyon railway. Clamecy is locally described as the capital of the valleys of the Yonne and classified under the French tourist criteria 'Station Verte de Vacances' (centre for outdoor activity–based vacations) and among the 'Plus Beau Détour de France' (most beautiful routes in France)."

Mailed from the post office next to the main railroad station in Sarrbrücken in what Wiki calls "Territory of the Saar Basin". PS: I just found out from Michel that this issue has lots of fly-speck varieties.

A parcel post and railway stamp with a postal CDS instead of the railway type cancel. I used to think that such parcels went through the postal system instead of the railway system. I now think they were primarily sent via rail, but initially from localities not having a railway station. From Wiki: "A railroad built in the 19th century connected Maaseik to the provincial capital Hasselt, but fell into disuse and was removed around 1950" This one dated 1946?

29th December (1900) Great Britain, Scott #108b, 5-shilling deep crimson (purely my opinion on the color, but it does not look like #108 carmine rose to me), high-denomination definitive stamp depicting Queen Victoria, with a "REGISTERED" oval postmark on this date, probably in 1900, but it might be 1908 or 1909, although that seems less likely, given that the similarly designed Edward VII issues were already available by 1902.

Sorry for the delay in responding, Andrew, but I wanted to check with a Japanese friend of mine to be sure on the correct translation of the place name on your postmark, and it's a good thing I did, as my original translation was close, but not completely correct. First of all, it is read from right to left, so rewritten from left to right, the characters are: 大阪木律, which translates to Osaka Kizu, where Osaka is the name of the Prefecture (a larger area like a province or county) and the town name is Kizu. I tried to do some web-searching on that, but did not turn up much. As for the year, one would need a year conversion table, based on when the Japanese Emperor reigning at the time was born, to convert it to the Gregorian or Roman calendar. I have not yet attempted to tackle that, but probably will at some point. Anyway, I hope this helps.

31 December 1976Happy New Year! Here's a New Year's Eve postmark from Copenhagen. Thanks to Beryllium Guy for reaching out this morning. Happy New Year to all. This is without a doubt the best stamp forum in all the land. I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things in the new year. (Scanner barely works, stamp table used for family holiday meals, stamp room converted to temporary guest room, plus a few more excuses too lame to mention...) Mark

I was getting pretty frustrated trying to figure out those kanji characters. I have another for tomorrow also. I would like to learn more about decoding them without hijacking this thread, so I'll try starting a new thread and see what happens.

A Scott 129b(1924-33) cancelled on January 1, 1934, if I did the math right...1925+9=1934..yep I worked on the place name and actually came up with Osaka and Kawaguchi (two cities in Japan) leading me to hope that it might be an RPO of some sort. Unfortunately, apparently it is an area in Osaka where foreigners used to stay in the Meiji era. (Hat tip to Mr.Beryllium Guy)

1st January (1900) Malaya - Selangor, Scott #29, 3-cent lilac and carmine rose definitive stamp, postmarked on this date in 1900 in Penang. Selangor is located south of Perak on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, and its capital is Kuala Lumpur. This Date in History. I did a web search to see if anything major happened on this date in history, and other than the establishment of British Protectorates for Northern & Southern Nigeria, and the birth of Xavier Cugat, who later became a famous band leader, there wasn't all that much. I really like this date in history because of what I imagine that it must have been like at the time. I know that officially the 20th Century did not begin until 1st January 1901, but just as it happened on 1st January 2000, I am guessing that many people regarded this as a milestone date, ending the 1890s and starting the 1900s, which would be an era of great change in the world.
