14th January (1937) Canada, Scott #223, 10-cent carmine rose commemorative honoring the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, postmarked on this date in 1937, probably in Montreal, Quebec. This is yet another nice, clear strike cancellation on one of these stamps which came to me from firstfrog2013 in the big auction lot. Thanks, Frog!

16th January (1919) Australia, Scott #60, 1/2-penny emerald green definitive stamp depicting King George V and postmarked in Melbourne on this date in 1919, 99 years ago today. It has a very clear, readily discernible watermark of "Multiple Crown over A" (Scott Wmk. 11). I found this stamp while sorting through my holdings of Australia over the holidays, and it is probably the finest example of a true clear-strike, socked-on-the-nose CDS that I have from Australia, and one of the best in my collection from any country.

3.5 rubles Russian Imperial Arms, used during the Soviet period from Nikolsk, Vologda. Due to the lack of Soviet stamps during this early revolutionary period, the Imperial arms issues were used: the kopeck values revalued 100X to rubles and the ruble values at face. They were used to frank registered items and postal forms - ordinary letters and postcards were post-free until mid-August 1921.

20th January (1898)Canada, Scott #53, 3-cent bright rose, Queen Victoria 60th Jubilee commemorative stamp, postmarked on this date in 1898 (120 years ago today) in Bromley Line, Ontario. When I did a search to learn more about this place, if I got it right, it seems that Bromley Line Street is a location in Westmeath, Ontario. Anyone who knows about this place and can provide better information is absolutely invited to post it here. Also, as I so often need to do, I must give another acknowledgement of gratitude to one of my TSF mentors, firstfrog2013, from whom I acquired this beautiful stamp. Those of you who remember when I joined TSF back in Nov-2016 may recall that the first post I ever made with images in it was of my Canada QV Jubilee set. I just love the design and execution of these stamps--they are my all-time favorites, so it gives me extra pleasure to be able to present more images of these beauties from time to time on the Forum, and of course, to thank Frog for being my "enabler" by sending me so many nice items last year.

The north bank of river in Palembang is known as Seberang Ilir and the south bank of the river in Palembang is known as Seberang Ulu. Picture postcard (view of Kazan cathedral in Leningrad) from Moscow to USA. The card is correctly franked at 7k with the 10th anniversary of October commemorative.
The sender of the postcard, Robert Buckalew, was among the personnel of the “Near East Relief” working in humanitarian relief in the Caucasus with base of operations in Leninakan, Armenia. In the message Buckalew indicates that he is on his way out of the USSR (termination of his service?).

I remember this day; we got to stay home from school to watch the inauguration. I recall thinking it was pretty boring compared to the coronation.

Cover from the village of Uspenskoe Liman (=port), Kherson - Odessa to Riga, Latvia (5/2/1923). Franked at 300r (=3r in 1923 currency), this is a rate that should have ended on January 9th, but no postage due was assessed. Blue cds of origin. Presumably due to lack of the proper registration labels, a blue-border insured-letter one was used. Addressed to “The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company”.

26th January (1938) Kenya-Uganda-Tanganyika, Scott #49, 15-cent red & black depicting Mount Kilimanjaro with portrait of King George V, postmarked on this date in 1938 (80 years ago today) in Nanyuki, Kenya. From Wikipedia: "Nanyuki is a market town in Laikipia County of Kenya lying northwest of Mount Kenya along the A2 road and at the terminus of the branch railway from Nairobi. It is situated just north of the Equator (0° 01' North). It was founded in 1907 by British settlers, some of whose descendants still live in and around the town. Nanyuki is currently the main airfield (airbase) of the Kenya Air Force. The British Army also keeps a base at The Nanyuki Show Ground (NSG) from where it conducts yearly desert and jungle training exercises on the mountain and in the arid areas to the north."
