FDC - Sir Isaac Brock, issued on the 200th anniversary of the birth of this military leader in Upper Canada, killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights. My late grandmother was always impressed by fame and told me repeatedly that I was a direct descendant of Sir Isaac Brock. However, Brock remained unmarried and died childless. Oh well. Maybe I'm a direct descendant of somebody who once knew Sir Isaac Brock! ha haha Ryan

SP 20, 1878 - This letter was sent from St. John, New Brunswick (N.B.) on September 20, 1878 - to Rockland, Carleton County, N.B. It was received in Woodstock, N.B.(also in Carleton County, N.B.) the following day as shown by the cancel in the back. Rockland, Carleton County was settled in 1826 and renamed "Coldstream". Note the fancy "cancel" on 3 c Small Queen as well as the circular date stamp. Frank Campbell, " Canada Post Offices" 1755-1895 does not mention any Post Office in Rockland, Carleton County, N.B. However he does mention a P.O. in Coldstream, Carleton County, N.B.

25th September (1910) Great Britain, Scott #128, one-penny scarlet, definitive stamp depicting King Edward VII, and postmarked on this date in 1910 on a mail ship (PAQUEBOT). I am posting this today in honor of the newly formed "France Numeral Postmarks Club", which is led by Jon ( blaamand), Rene ( renden), and Jens ( barbu). I am clearly bringing up the rear in that effort, but then again, someone has to! So, it's not a France numeral postmark, to be sure, but I know that Jon likes the PAQUEBOT postmarks, as do I, and I actually only have just a few (3-4 at most) in my collection of a few hundred postmarks with legible dates, so they are not so easy to find, at least in my limited experience. Anyway, here's to the new club--long may it prosper!

September 27th, 1990 One of a set of three "Fuer die Wohlfahrtspfelege" issues from the FRG (AFA# 2425), as a First Day Cover. Specially chosen for Beryllium Guy as I know he will like the postbox on the cancellation! By the way, I believe this is the last FRG issue, reunification happened the week after that!

Specially chosen for Beryllium Guy as I know he will like the postbox on the cancellation! By the way, I believe this is the last FRG issue, reunification happened the week after that! Thank you very much, Xavier, I am honored by your post! I do like the postboxes.... I feel certain that you could not have known it, as I don't think I ever mentioned it to you, but I have a second and perhaps more important connection to your post. I was in West Germany in November 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down, and it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life! I wish now that I had had the courage to go over to the East to see what it was really like then. There were warnings on the West German radio stations at the time telling us that no one knew if the borders would remain open indefinitely or not, so we were advised not to attempt to go to East Germany in those first days. For me, the incredible thing was seeing all of the Trabant cars from East Germany rolling down the streets of Munich, and people celebrating in the streets--it was absolutely unforgettable! This is a photo which I found on the Internet of a "Trabi" that looks very much like what I remember seeing during those days almost 29 years ago!

I actually lived in former East Germany (Greifswald, on the Baltic Coast), in 1999-2003. There were still Trabis around, then, and I even got to ride in one. Now, you can still rent those for special occasions in Berlin. The view through my window in Greifswald included the famous local belltower (AFA #3097, from 2000). Boy, these bells were loud! Shown here in a special cover sold then by the local stamp club, to which I belonged. (Sorry if it carries the wrong postmark date)

October 1st, 1984. A special cover for the first high-speed postal train between Paris and Lyon, which my late grand-mother (a stamp connaisseur herself) mailed to herself. I was lucky enough to be the last of her 14 grand-children still collecting stamps at the time of her passing and thus inherited quite a few nice pieces, which I'll be sure to share here as opportunity arises. The cover features the postal train itself (YT#2327, issued on 8 september 1984).
