50 kopecks Soviet PSE used as blank after the dissolution of the USSR. Mailed from Barnaul, Altai, Russia to Rezekne, Latvia (19/11 backstamp). Franked at the 75 rubles Airmail rate with 7X10R Russia definitives and a 5R Soviet definitive. This rate was valid from November 4th until March 1993 during this inflationary period.

Here is a nice registered cover for this day in 1960, from Saar Hammaqim in Israel to Bosanski Brod (now just Brod), Yugoslavia. In those days and even sometimes today, the translation into English just did not go right. I was trying to work out the place name from the cancel when I saw the registered label and had a chuckle. Today, hopefully and in most cases, the translation would read 'Sha'ar HaEmeq' which looks quite different. It means 'Gateway of the Valley' or 'Valley Gate'. There are many such odd translations both in Philately and the wider world.

What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

11th November (1915-1917) Many thanks to Steve ( tomiseksj ) for his post to mark Veteran's Day in the U.S., which also marks, of course, Armistice Day for the end of World War I here in France and other parts of Europe. The stamp dealer at the Aix market recently sold me a cover postmarked on this date during WWI, and it is pictured below. He labelled it as being from 1917, but I could find no evidence on the cover itself to confirm that. Perhaps smauggie can tell us more about the auxiliary markings on this one. U.S., Scott #335 or #378, 5-cent blue, perf 12 definitive stamp featuring portrait of George Washington, 1st U.S. President. I cannot check the watermark, which would be one way to tell the difference between the two possible catalogue numbers, but I could confirm that the stamp is perf 12 with one straight edge. This example was postmarked on this date during World War I (presumably between 1915-1917) in Bernardsville, New Jersey and sent to Lyon, France. Auxiliary markings: OUVERT PAR L'AUTORITE MILITAIRE = "opened by the military authority" on the franked side, presumably a censorship opening, and then marked on the reverse with a seal from the Dieppe Postal Control Division of the French Ministry of War.

11th November (1915-1917) Perhaps smauggie can tell us more about the auxiliary markings on this one. Lovely cover. As you surmise they are censor markings. It looks like part of an official postal document was cut up and used as a seal to reseal the envelope after inspection, which is fascinating.

November 13th, 2008. Registered cover from France, mailed from Courtaboeuf, Essonne (south suburb of Paris). Note the mixed franking with Francs for the large stamps and two 0.05 Euro Mariannes to complete the price. The black-and-white stamp about the Blue-Beard tale in the top row center is one of my favourite French stamps.

30 kopecks Russian PSE used locally in St Petersburg. The envelope had been originally uprated (during 1992) to 1 ruble 50k with the application of the octagonal "Post Paid 120 kop" handstamp. The rapid rise of the postal rates during this inflationary period made necessary an additional re-valuation with the application of the rectangular "TP" (=Taxe Percue) handstamp, to make up the new rate of 15 rubles.

November 16th, 1937. Cover mailed from Managua, Nicaragua to Paris, France. I picked up this piece at the Aix market last month because of the blue stamp with the map on top, where Nicaragua indicates a chunk of Honduras as "litigious territory", which led to a serious diplomatic incident between the two countries.

Here is a cover mailed from Prague to Jerusalem on this date in 1957. It also has a nice Jerusalem backstamp.
The stamps commemorate various Czech writers: Josef Kajetan Tyl (Scott 759. This one 1956, rest are 1957), Ivan Olbracht (Scott 781), Karel Toman (Scott 782), F.X. Salda (Scott 783), and Terezia Vansova (Scott 784). In Prague on this day, various communist leaders were in town for the funeral of their old comrade, Czechoslovakian President Antonin Zapotocky. e.g. this from The Baltimore Sun: (Zapotocky image from Wikipedia) Well, I also had a 1958 cover from Brazil for today, but it's time to strap on the old feedbag. So it will have to wait for next year. ;-)
