Two days ago I posted a cover for the polar circumnavigation flight of Pan Am flight #50 which departed San Francisco on Oct 28 1977. The front side of the cover is postmarked on the departure date. This is the back of that cover, postmarked Oct 30, the day flight #50 landed back in San Francisco after its record breaking 2 and a half day flight.

October 31. Nothing spooky unfortunately. This is Luxembourg, Scott#74 (1895), cancelled in Echternach on Oct. 31, 1903. It depicts Grand Duke Adolphe. He was Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1890 until his death in 1905.

Inflation-period Soviet cover from Kharkov to Berlin. Franked at 150 rubles with 10k (100X) revalued Imperial arms – the ordinary international rate until 3/11 was 75R. There is a handwritten notation for registration, but no other details, hence the letter was probably sent unregistered, BUT possibly as a double-weight letter.
It is unclear why the letter received an oval postage-due handstamp of Kharkov, which was then withdrawn with the application of a “СНЯАТА” (snyata) cachet (41X7 mm). The envelope had a lithographed printing at left – probably a firm’s logo – that has been plastered over by the stamps.

October 31st, 2012. Greenland cover, postmarked from Kangilinnguit, by the Ecopolaris Missions Research Team (and signed by the team members). This was a series of yearly missions to eastern Greenland to monitor the populations of lemmings and their predators to survey the local ecosystem. A French-German team was conducting the field work, and they had the good idea to raise funds for their expeditions by offering (for a small fee of 8 euros) to send their sponsors a letter from Greenland during the expedition, with a decorated envelope and, if possible, a thematically-related stamp. I have a few other such covers I will post down the line too.

November 1st, 1968. FDC from Canada for the Christmas issue that year featuring an Inuit sculpture. I suspect renden also has this one, so apologies if I am stealing his thunder. This cover is a part of a set my late grand-father received at his medical practice. These were sent by a pharmaceutical company and contained advertisements for their products. Now that's what I call targeted communication!

November 1. Cape of Good Hope (now in South Africa), Scott #64 (1902-1904) depicting King Edward VII. Cancelled in Kimberley, Nov 1 1905. It might be 1909, but it looks more like 05, but with the 5 character placed upside down. Sorry about the little bit of yellow fuzz on the stamp. Didn't notice that until I posted it, and I didn't have time to rescan. Will fix later.

Vasia, thank you very much for yet another interesting post. You are the champion of the Postmark Calendar! Am I right in thinking that your post refers to the Kharkov which is located in present-day Ukraine? If so, I was there in January 2006. There is a scientific research institute located in Kharkov, and I was there in an attempt to do business with them at that time. As my visit was in January, I can state that it was the coldest temperature that I ever experienced in my life. It was -40 degrees, the only temperature at which the reading in C and F is the same. Brrrrrrr!!

Brrrrrrr!! Yes, Kharkov in present-day Ukraine. You can see the Ukrainian spelling of the name - Kharkiv - in the postmark. A time when issues different from language and ethnicity divided the population of the area.

November 2nd, 1964. Registered letter mailed from Strasbourg-Neudorf to Magdeburg, East Germany. Registration label from Strasbourg-Neudorf in the bottom left and mention "Recommandee" typed in red in the top left. Good stab to the Germans by having a stamp on the envelope celebrating the 25th anniversary of the French Liberation.

November 3rd, 2010. Postmarked from French post office 29120A (again either Amiens or Paris). Note the use of a mixed currency franking, with older stamps in Francs (for a total of 16Fr40 = 2Euro50) and completed by a strip of 3 Mariannes (The Marianne and Europe design, chosen by President Sarkozy and issued in 2008) at 1Euro35 each.

7 kopecks Soviet PSE used as a blank in independent Ukraine from Kivertsi, Volyn to Kiev (5/11 backstamp). The PSE had been originally uprated in 1992 with an octagonal 93k handstamp for a 1 karbovanets rate. By September 1993 (and until December of that year) the domestic letter rate had jumped to 27 karbovanets. Cash payment of the postal rate was indicated by the application of the square "27" handstamp.

November 4. Most of the stamps I have, especially the better ones are from my uncle's collection. He was a lifelong stamp collector. On Nov. 3, 1944 when he was in his early twenties, he wrote a letter home to his parents. The top of which is shown below. He was serving as a Yeoman in the Captain's office aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16). The next day, the envelope containing the letter was cancelled. The cover is shown below, bearing two Victory stamps (Scott #905). The next day, Nov. 5, 1944, while serving at his battle station providing ammunition for an anti-aircraft gun on the island superstructure, the Kamikaze plane pictured below hit the Lexington near that set of AA guns. All the other crew members of his gun were killed. He was badly injured, but survived, after a long stay in the hospital. In total, 47 men were killed and 127 wounded. I don't know, but have wondered which his parents received first, this letter (telling them not to worry), or the notification that their son had been seriously wounded in action. He saved the letter and cover, and I know enough from him to connect it to that event. It makes me wonder how many other covers are out there in collections with poignant stories that have become disconnected from the item after passing through multiple hands.

7 kopecks Soviet PSE used as a blank after the dissolution of the USSR from Minsk, Belarus to St. Petersburg, Russia. Cash payment of the appropriate 20 rubles charge during this inflationary period was indicated by the octagonal "Belarus Post" meter. The PSE commemorates Belarusian musician and conductor Ryhor Shyrma (1892-1978).

Non-denominated PSE used from the small town of Yerky, Cherkassy, Ukraine to Kiev (8/11 backstamp). Cash payment of the 27 karbovanets intercity letter rate was indicated by the rectangular Soviet-era "Paid" (Oplocheno) handstamp.
