October 20th, 1928
Soviet cover from Orenburg to New York, 2/11/1928. Franked correctly at 28k with 2x10k + 8k Large Heads. The non-standard registration label is on brown paper, perfed, with pre-printed city name and registration number. Addressed to Stanislaus Zbyszko, 2-time heavyweight wrestling champion in the 1920's.

An interesting mystery. I did not find a postcard with that design either in my catalog. Also noteworthy, the stamp was nominally issued in 1968 but the postmark is from 1983, so someone held on to this stamp for quite a while! I hadn't noticed the year! I had just assumed that was a 6. Postage should have been 20 cents in 1983. Now I'm perplexed. This is a piece of envelope, and part of an address is visible. It's my parents' address, but they moved from that house around 1975. It kind of seems like a fraudulent stamp, and a postmark with the wrong year. Weird.

Still doesn't explain how such a thick cardboard stamp came to be.

Hi, Xavier & Steve ( stevew ): Thanks for your interesting posts on this unusual item. I have a theory on what might have happened, so here goes: I am wondering if this might be an example of a technically illegal reuse of this stamp. I agree that there is no PSE or postal card with this design, but I remember the stamp well, as it was issued in the early days of my collecting, and I was one of those American youths back then! Anyway, my theory is that this stamp was already affixed to another envelope or postcard but either never went through the mail or went through the mail uncancelled, and someone cut it out from that envelope and glued it to the new one. That would account for the unusual thickness and trimmed perforations. And as for not paying the correct postal rate of the day, I would guess that this example was simply underpaid but sneaked through the system unnoticed. It does look like 1983 to me, too. What do you guys think about my theory? Maybe a bit of a long-shot but I think it fits what we can see about the item....

Well, it's either in Paris (if this came franking an envelope from Theodore Champion) or Amiens (if it came from Yvert&Tellier). But I don't remember.

October 24th is United Nations Day. So there are lots of UN anniversary issues on that date. I went back through the previous years of this thread and saw that we had, up to now, only seen the 15th anniversary issue. So here is a twofer: 2001: A special postcard emitted from Vienna to celebrate 50 years of the UN postal administration (joint Austrian - UN-Vienna franking). 1955: FDC of the block issued by the UN NY administration for its 10th anniversary

On the 24th of October, 1980, it cost a mere 10c to mail a postcard. Someone in Garberville, CA, took advantage of that low price, but through the vagaries of fate the postcard eventually ended up in my possession.
Pleasingly, Garberville is named after the first postmaster of the town, Jacob Garber (wiki). Besides the mailing of this postcard, there was not much else going on in Garberville on this date in 1980. Though near Garberville is the Redwoods (Trappist) Monastery, which looks quite lovely. And on the day in question some Unitarian minister was talking about his experiences there. From The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, CA) for Friday 24 October 1980 .

So many threads this could go to - Postmark of the Day; Luxembourg: Covers; Pictorial Postmark... I'll pick this one & leave it at that for now. Not sure what this was about, but it was cancelled 51 years ago today in 1967,

I have to cheat and post this now, because I don't think I'll be able to tomorrow. But it's the 28th already for most of the world, so it must be ok. On October 28, 1927, Pan American Airways began service, flying mail between Key West Florida and Havana Cuba. On October 28 1977, to celebrate it's 50th anniversary, Pan Am Flight #50 flew a special performance 747, carrying paying customers, on a record breaking around the world flight over the both poles. It took off from San Francisco, flew over the north pole, and made a stop in London. Then it flew to Cape Town, South Africa, where it made another stop, flew to Auckland, New Zealand over the south pole, and from there, returned to San Francisco. The trip took 2 and a half days, setting a record that stood until 2008. The cover below is postmarked on the front the day the plane took off, and on the back of the envelope is postmarked the day it landed. I'll add a scan here of the back on the 30th. There must be more copies of this cover out there, but I haven't been able to find any on the internet. I'd like to learn more about the cover itself. Unfortunately, when the back was cancelled, the ink from the envelope on top of it smeared, marring its appearance. This is something my uncle collected. It was addressed to him. This CNN article tells more about this flight, and links to a short film about the flight.

Artcraft FDC's are common, and don't seem to generate a lot of collector interest. I like their engraved cachets. I have some from the 1960's and 1970's that my uncle and my mom collected. This one is an FDC for two of the four historic preservation series (Scott #1440-1443) released October 29, 1971. #1440 & #1441 are on this cover. The Morgan Whaling ship is kind of cool. She's currently the last wooden whaling vessel remaining. In 2010, work began to restore her to being seaworthy. In the summer of 2014 she sailed on a several months long tour of a number of east coast ports. This National Geographic blog post has some wonderful photos of her under sail at sea in her full glory, as well as a nice short video near the end of the blog post. I'm not sure why San Diego CA was chosen as the postmark location, as none of the 4 stamps connect to it as far as I can tell, even though San Diego has some nice historic sites, such as the Star of David ship, and the San Diego Mission (founded 1769).

I've noticed a few odd FDC ceremony sites with American stamps that seem odd. One wonders the logic of these sites. Perhaps it was just their turn came up for the next FCD ceremony!
